The Dark Tower:

[up]Huh, first time I hear about that. Well, unless it's a sequel (and a prequel seems much more probable), I don't have a problem with it. There's certainly enough room for more stories. As long as he doesn't screw it up...

Edit: And OF COURSE my post went in the new page...

It looks like the planned film version is dead, sadly.

Really upset about that.

Javier Bardem as Roland would have been the best thing ever. Literally.

ALL HAIL THE GUNSLINGER
The Wind Through the Keyhole, from what I've read, takes place between Wizard and Glass and Wolves, detailing the Ka-Tet's adventures between the books. Previously it was going to be about Roland's orignal Ka-Tet, but King may have changed his mind betwixt then and now.

I'm very excited for this new Dark Tower novel, but I'm wondering if Mr. King is going to revise the other DT novels. He said in the foreword for the revised version of The Gunslinger that it was time to begin the overall revisions.

War ALWAYS changes. Man does not.
I will not be reading them. If you saw my face whilst I was reading through the last few pages of the last book in the series, you would know why. Twenty years of reading the books flushed down the toilet because King hates endings.

"You call that a warning?" Draco was screaming now. "You call that a warning? When we're doing a ritual that calls for a permanent sacrifice?"

  • [up]Quote from Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which sort of fits how I feel about the warning King gave.
And I would have done precisely what Draco did to Harry next if King had been in the same room as me, given the capability and the choice.

So, I'm gonna start on this series.

Should I read the original first book or revised?
I was wondering why frisbees got bigger as they got closer then it hit me.

Original is probably the best. I am not a fan of King's revised works, so I am probably biased.
More inhuman scum? NEXT!
I honestly wouldn't know either way, since I started the series with the third book (not by choice, the library didn't have the first two) and didn't really feel like I was missing anything thanks to the recap at the beginning of the book.

You should read when you get the chance. The first book can be read in an afternoon.

[up]It has been argued that the first one is the best one of the lot. I agree.

The revised version is fine, but the original is worth checking out as well...I have both.

Mort Romantique
Not sure if I should create a thread in the Fanfic forum, but it'd be nice if someone wrote a fanfic that chronicles Roland's adventures from the fall of Gilead to the Battle of Jericho Hill or from the Battle of Jericho Hill to The Gunslinger. There's so much untapped potential there, plus I really want to know what happened to Rhea, John Farson and General Grissom.
L'idylle est mort.
As to Farson, he rode in on his promises of 'democracy' and his brutality. I'd lay odds that, once in power (or once seeing himself as being in power firmly), he promptly shat on all his promises, which like as not enraged a mob even he couldn't control. Old Walter probably withdrew his aid at that time, and watched cackling as the people he'd tricked into destroying a harsh but workable system of governance went Charyou Tree on Johnny's ass.

In The Stand page Paranoia Fuel: Extensively talked about by the characters themselves. One of the original "Evil US Government quarantines innocent civilians at gunpoint and leaves them to die" plots, it seemed uncharacteristically cynical (even for King) until, say 2005 (as if!) Not to mention Capt. Trips itself.

I think that's supposed to be a Guantanamo Bay reference. However, it really doesn't work in this context. When I re-read The Stand a couple years ago, I kept thinking how the government's attempts to conceal the spread of Captain Trips could never work in a world with widespread Internet and cell phone use.

Slayer of Grues
Pretty much. I'd really appreciate a rewrite of the other books. Insert some more foreshadowing, tighten up the continuity, and expand a bit on the vaguer points. There's a lot of weird crap thrown at you in the last two books that you kind of have to take on good faith that King will see you through.

Over all I'd say he did at least have an idea of the final ending, he just had a hard time getting there and made up a lot of things as he whent that would hopefully explain itself later.
Roses are red, violets are blue.

I'm sorry to say, you've been eaten by a Grue.
