So with the year coming to an end, I feel obligated to ask everyone their opinion is on this year. In what areas have we, as a society succeeded in and in what areas have we failed?

Overall, was this a good or bad year for the world?

How does 2010 compare to 2009? What are your predictions for 2011?

2010:

Good: The downfall of the irresponsible Congress elected in 2008. Also the failure of the amnesty-in-disguise that is the DREAM Act. Outside of politics, the San Francisco Giants won the World Series for the first time since the team moved to San Francisco in 1962. In addition, the Texas Rangers managed to do well in the playoffs and scored their first ever trip to the World Series. At the personal level, I finally graduated with my bachelor's degree.

Bad: The economy is in terrible shape and nothing the last Congress did  *

has alleviated any part of it. We've spent all year significantly above 9% unemployment. In addition a string of incidents worldwide has led to the conclusion that 2011 will be a very bloody year as far as war goes what with renewed war in Korea a likelihood and then you have issues with Iran and Israel going on to say nothing of Afghanistan.

Expectations/Hopes for 2011: I want things to get better over time in all aspects, really I do, but the realist in me has long since come to the conclusion that things in the world will get much worse long before they get any better. Thus I cannot reasonably expect either an economic turnaround nor can I expect an outbreak of peace to show up. In short my expectations of 2011 are quite low.

How about a non-America centric one...

GOOD: ... the World Cup was pretty awesome, I guess (Germany shoulda one, in my humble opinion. Still kicked those limeys' sorry asses, though!); oh, and the Korean peninsula avoided war (so far); DADT repealed; the diplomatic cable leaks are quite hilarious; a socialist/ Marxist was elected president of Brazil, again (w00t!).

BAD: The Haiti Earthquake killed hundreds of thousands of people, which was immediately followed by a cholera outbreak; the riots in Greece and Britain; Ireland and Greece's economic collapse; the fucked up election of the Ivory Coast; Afghanistan is going to hell in a hacksaw damn quick; American politics still suck (republicans are reprehensible, democrats are spineless pussies, Tea Party is insane) ; continued guerrilla violence in the Philippines and India;

All in all, no better than '09. 2011 will probably suck for most of the earth, while we yanks can sit back and reap what we have sown. But nothing close to the worst year ever. I'd give that to maybe 1916...

TO BE CONTINUED.

Good: I still have my job and have survived another year with my wife. We got a second dog my family is doing ok in their own little corners of the central U.S. War has not yet broken out in Asia and we are Supposedly wrapping up our operations in the middle east.

Bad: I am still in debt and they are going to gouge the shit out of my APR once I am off the programs that have been keeping it low. The increase in visible violence around the world is unsettling and possibly an indicator for slowly brewing larger and more violent conflict in the not so far future. Things need to improve a lot and my wife still needs a job. Both political bodies of the U.S. are so horribly inept and corrupt its a wonder our country hasn't collapsed under their combined weight of incompetence and greed.

Good: A very good social year for me at university, I haven't failed anything, I'm still with my girlfriend and I've been to some fantastic music festivals and gigs.

Bad: Unfortunately, I can't think of anything good in a more general sense. Politics-wise, the May election left us with a majority Tory government propped up by the Lib Dems, who haven't been able to influence the coalition as much as they'd have liked (read: at all). I didn't join the bloody party to see it suck up to the Conservatives, and my misplaced idealism and belief in Nick Clegg and Vince Cable have proven false - again - making their betrayal and their willingness to just roll with whatever the Tories throw at them smart all the more. More personally, my graduation from university is coming ever closer and I haven't a clue what I'll be doing once I've gone.

Sure okay...

Good: Nuclear arms reduction treaty signed, DADT repealed, Health care reform passed, FDA reform passed, Jerry Brown elected Governor, Prop 23/27 defeated, Prop 20 passed, net neutrality bill passed, Jon Stewart hosted the Rally To Restore Sanity.

Bad: Tax cuts for the rich passed, Dream act defeated, prop 19 failed, unemployment continues to remain high, Obama continues to cave to Republicans, America stupidly elects to power the same party that got us into this economic mess, real financial reform has failed to pass, no public option has been implemented, and Faux News continues to air.

Some personal ones mixed in:

Good: DADT repealed, economy might be repairing itself, landed a section editor position on my campus newspaper, semester GPA of 3.67 (with a couple of close As, and one AB that was almost an A), Golden Sun Dark Dawn.

Bad: Senator Feingold defeated, Republicans take house, Korea seems to be blowing up, dad still unemployed, said campus newspaper in constant financial duress, campus chose to rip up our disc golf course for the new site of our mineral museum (the museum is awesome, I just wish it wasn't there), haven't had a girlfriend in over two years, Final Fantasy XIII.

My personal life in 2010 was pretty good. I learned a lot, I got a laptop, I'm doing well in college, my parents are still employed, etc.

As far as politics go, 2010 was more of a less a disaster, but everyone else has already posted that.

Good: Democrats lost ground in Congress.

Bad: The best replacement available was Republicans. The country is still moving in the direction of spineless liberalism, in which individual rights are destroyed for the sake of ill-defined collective good. People are still retarded enough to believe that "nature" is good, rather than meaningless chaos, and would rather move mankind back to a state of ignorance, disease, starvation, and fear than progress technologically and industrially.

^I sure as hell hope that's a poe.

Anyway... Good: Congress got a lot done Bad: That came about because the Republicans got control of congress, and the Democrats had to push their agenda through at the last minute.

Good: Started getting access to The Daily Show on free to air TV in Australia, took up Magic The Gathering, managed abridging of IJBM flamewar that made it to my only ever Made of Forum Win, was introduced to many, many series, got letter published in prestigious newspaper castigating Bishop of Parramatta for spouting nonsense about atheism during Easter, started watching Top Gear, got L plates.

Bad: Australia had most pathetic election in recent history, found self getting angry about retarded things said by moron in America, failed to get job, developed abiding hatred for concepts such as "business-appropriate clothing" and "firm documents have to be done in this font", failed to conquer world. Also all the disasters and shit.

Good: DADT repealed, health care passed, 9/11 bill passed, I managed to get into College, Congress got a lot more done then I thought they would, Golden Sun Dark Dawn, The Daily Show is still awesome.

Bad: The Economy is still in the tank and will probably remain so for a while, The earthquake in Haiti, the BP Oil spill, Russ Feingold lost his reelection, the Tea party is still crazy as ever, my state elected a Lex Luthor stand in as governor, The Last Airbender

Good: Chilean miners; DADT repealed, 9/11 bill passed; Ford, First Solar, and gift stores made profit; passed last class and oral defense.

Bad: earthquake in Haiti, Oil spill, the economy / no jobs, health care; got sick, missed deadline, didn't graduate, gained weight, went into debt.

Ugly: Wikileaks.

Good: Car is still running really nice. Got promoted, got a few ribbons. Might go to sniper school. Things are still going well with the girlfriend.

Bad: Politics is still stupid and partisan. Republicans/Tea Party shifting even further right and alienating moderate and non-religious Conservatives, Democrats still spineless idealists who want to please the world and save everyone instead of being realistic and practical.

Remains to be seen: Sentencing for Pvt Manning and Major Hasan. At the realistic rate of drawdown, I have one or two more deployments to Afghanistan to put on my belt before we're out of there for the most part.

Good: Life is going good.

Politics in south america, china, india look to be on an up-trend for the most part.

Bad: I'm finding politics in Canada to be overly partisan and overwhelmed by powerplay games. I find the US Congress incapable of resolving the issues that are facing them because the parties in power are just so corrupt. I'm concerned about the rise of far-right parties in Europe. I'm worried about political instability and mass corruption in the democratic government of Pakistan.

Good: Health care bill was passed, DADT was repealed, unemployment was extended for another 13 months, Chilean miners were rescued

Bad: Haitan earthquake, the Republicans winning all of those seats, the Gulf Oil spill, Bush tax cuts remaining, tuition hikes in Britain, MTA fare hikes over here, the rather disconcerting rise of right-wing xenophobia in Europe, America still trying to play hero and failing, the rise of Islamophobia in America

Good: The economy is recovering in Germany  *

. The new MoD turned out to be actually competent  *. They finally got around and made the 2° climate agreement, which is better than nothing. Korea didn't go sink into warfare.

Bad: Most of the jobs created by the economic "recovery" are in the very low wage sector  *

. The various natural disasters around the world. Green party rising in polls  *. The political class here showed just how much they don't care about the people on multiple occasions and the media showed just how much they are in bed with the political class. The bailouts of Greece and Ireland and with that the slow realization that the Euro is a losing bargain for us.

I'd say it was a bad year and 2011 is gonna be worse. Then again, I'm a pessimist.
