Crine Dela Ranefort: Villain or Not?

Ah Crine Dela Ranefort. My most perplexing character I have planned. He is nice to basically everyone in a universe where Humongous Mecha are tearing shit up in a never ending war between the Black Wing Army and the Valendian Empire. He is always polite to the protagonist, the heir of The Empire, even though he has technically vowed to end the Empire to end the war, mostly due to the inflated nationalist pride on the Valendian side.

Crine explicitly says he is doing all of this to make sure the world is at peace and to make everyone stop killing one another. However, to do this, he basically kidnapped kids who were able to pilot ancient Humongous Mecha and...rather than mistreating them and harshly training them as Tyke Bombs, he made them want to be Tyke Bombs by being nice to them. He made sure he only took them from abusive households.

Even in a fight, when he ruined the hero's most powerful strategy, and had the hero at his mercy, he said, "I am sorry I ruined such an impressive strategy. I see you made it thinking my machine's long range attacks were its specialty...it just would not be nice to finish you off now...go on, train some more."

The hero thought Crine was a remorseless Complete Monster, so this induced a Heroic BSoD...as Crine planned it would, so The Hero would not have to die in any of his plans.

He even cries when his Dragon, Michael Runehart is stabbed in the chest and fights on, both knowing Michael was going to die. Crine even apologized to the Michael's sister, saying, "If I could prevent that distasteful event from happening, I would...but I cannot. His demise hurt me as much as it hurt you."

Why does he need children? If they weren't Tyke Bombs, but adults, then he would be a hero, possibly more so than your protagonist, although I don't know about your protagonist character. If it's necessary to use Tyke Bombs, he may still be more of a harsh antihero, if he can't see the difference between Tyke Bombs and adults, he's a villain.

Edit: Tyke Bombs isn't a trope after all. Well, I got what you meant anyway.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

His machines need Tyke Bombs raised up from kidhood in using them. Trying to make an adult use a Primeri without proper training for X number of years depending on the machine...the result is gory, High Octane Nightmare Fuel, and it involves bubbling skin, exploding bones, and...yeah.

It would depend on the audience, I suppose. There's no way for him to stop the war without using the Tyke Bombs? Because if there are other possibilities, he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist. If there's no other way, he's an antihero, slipping into Necessarily Evil territory.

Yeah, pretty much Valendia is Lawful Stupid / Chaotic Stupid or something. They are pretty much: "We are the Proud Mech Knights of Valendia! We don't accept your treaties!! We are in your territories, killing your combatants!"

Even the hero admits Crine makes sense.

So what's the source of the conflict between Crine and the protagonist? Using tyke bombs? Because if you make Crine represent peace to the protagonist's war, the protagonist gets a lot less sympathetic.

Yeah, at first, our lovable hero is just a Jerkass Proud Warrior Race Guy who wants to continue the war. Then he finds out about Crine, calls the Tyke Bombs manipulation...it blows up in The Hero's face. Spectacularly. When Crine makes the little decision to make all of both countries into Instrumentality to make everyone understand each other, that is when the Hero grows up, starts trying to stop the war other ways, and stop Crine from doing that.

It sounds like Crine starts as a villain then turns into an unpredictable protagonist (that isn't directly obeying the main protagonist). I know he doesn't truly change; he just changes in the audience's eyes.

Crine sounds great for getting the audience to wonder what will happen next.

Yeah, and the thing is, even when killing people, he is always serene and nice. He even wears an outfit that makes him look like a priest.

Contrast to almost sociopathic blood knight Claudio, and I might have a seriously confused fandom when this story is made.
