I got an e-mail from Sony yesterday telling me I was allowed to download the free beta of LittleBigPlanet 2
, so I did and I tried it out a bit last night.
So far, the levels the game comes with are more well-designed. I was not a fan of the levels of the first game for some reason, but these have some of the creative ideas I'd often see from player-made levels, while still having a high level polish and generally good gameplay.
I played only one player-made level - an overhead view beat-em-up with rather lacking gameplay, but its own unique play mechanics including combos, and original voice acting. It's great that you can create your own "games" in a sense, but they'd better have good play mechanics, or I won't really care for them. Good ideas are one thing, good implementation is another.
The play mechanics are the same, and jumping is just as floaty as before. It just doesn't have the tight platforming of a Mario
game, which is ultimately why my brother and I stopped playing the original LittleBigPlanet
despite the incredible diversity of its player-made levels.
Hopefully high quality level design and the ability to modify play mechanics will result in some amazing levels in the sequel. From what little I've seen, the potential is certainly there.
