It's weird how the game breaks if you use the Boom costume though.
Especially how a Mii in the Knuckles costume gets their midair jump reset every time the game's paused.

I sure said that! That would be the greatest goddamn in-joke ever.
Wouldn't even break the game.
You can't pause online anyway and doing it at tourneys DQs you.
Would be one hell of a way to cheat in single player though.
Seeing all the changes made to the gameplay in Metroid: Samus Returns makes me wonder if Sakurai will ever update Samus' moveset to be more faithful to her games. Her current moveset is a product of technical limitations of the first Smash game on the N64, and it really shows compared to newer, more accurately adapted characters like Mega Man or even Pit's new moveset.
HYYYPE!!!I've come up with an idea before:
An open mind and compassionate heart are among the most important qualities we can have.So did I,, but, honestly, I prefer Noah's.
Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Wow, you're too kind! I must admit, though, that your idea for the beam charging did inspire my idea to incorporate the Spazer Beam to some extent.
An open mind and compassionate heart are among the most important qualities we can have. After playing Samus Returns, I thought
Maybe a Zeta Metroid might be a good contender for Smash Bros. Their body provides more freedom than the iconic base Metroids, and they're a part of the newest Metroid games, being one of the kinds of Metroids you have to kill.
Why not Omega Metroids? Well... honestly it's because I don't really like the designs of them in M:SR...

The main problem with Ridley lies more in his proportions than his size as a whole, as they seem like they'd cause balancing issues in terms of defining hit- and hurt-boxes. I mean, compare the size of his wings and tail to the rest of him.
Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Has any mook ever been a playable character? The closest thing we have is Pikmin.
Where there's life, there's hope.Well, Ridley's wings and tail tend to not be in the 2D plane the action is taking place. And it is not like you could even damage him by hitting him there.
Seriously, it is a winged Xenomorph. We already have a character with wings and tail.
We don't have any characters with wings and/or tails that are so large compared to the body they're attached to, though, unless you have any examples. It's not purely a question of size, but of scaling. And, if you're saying that his wings and tail would stay off the 2D plane, then you preclude him being able to attack with either of them as well, which severely gimps what the team could do with him. So, you either get a character with significantly extended hit-/hurt-boxes that would surely be a nightmare to balance, or you get another bipedal fighter that could easily be filled by some other character more easily.
Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Or the best of both worlds, and fully embrace disjointed hitboxes?
You could tuck up Ridley's wings and tail for when he's not using them, and that could make him fit.
He is certainly a tricky one, but I still think it's possible. Hopefully whoever directs the next Smash game can figure it out (not to knock on Sakurai, he's done an amazing job with all the characters who are in, but people do have their limits).

Make him too small, and he's not true to the Metroid series, but make him too large, and it's going to be very difficult to balance his moveset. It would take a lot of work to figure out how best to portray the character, if at all.
HYYYPE!!!Has anyone posted this?
Where there's life, there's hope.Wasn't there a Ridley mod for Brawl or something that was actually playable?
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!'actually playable' and 'fun, balanced gameplay' are two different things
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeThere is, and while he's very well designed, he looks pretty small. Bit weird seeing him stand as tall as Samus, when he's consistently at least twice her height (not including the original Metroid or the non-canon Melee intro).

HYYYPE!!!I still think it's not completely unreasonable to just make Ridley a giant playable character. You can already play as all other characters using a Mega Mushroom and it works okay, why wouldn't a character specifically designed to be that size work? Yeah, it'd be hard, but this is Smash Bros. The development of characters for this game is equal parts art and advertising, and very little else.
Items are optional, and they are banned in tournaments.
Where there's life, there's hope.I like how I made a comment about Metroid and didn't mention Ridley at all, and then the chat exploded into Ridley talk. xD

Personally, I like the idea of including some of the other Metroid forms.
I'd be all for Classic and Boom Sonic being costumes.
