@Pulse: Since there's a "glitch"(I think intentional) if you sometimes use a Gameshark on Smash 64, it'll force you as Mario(default costume) in Single Player Mode(or Classic as we tend to call it), it makes me feel like Mario is always the natural starter for Classic as is.
I think I went with Pikachu on the original the first time. I cannot remember who I went through Classic with first on Melee and Brawl. I'll play the demo soon and figure out a potential option for For.
