She has to do that, or she'll never find the culprit behind the invisible prankster! The ends justify the means! If she has to turn in her badge to her superior, who happens to be herself (princess and all), then that's what she'll do!

Also: bunny princess?

Tewi-rah must be a reference I'm not getting due to not having any experience to Watership Down. Nice write-up though.

[up][up] Kotohime means "little rabbit princess." Even though she doesn't appear to have anything to do with rabbits. Although she does have red eyes.

[up] The -rah suffix in Watership Down is used to address the chief rabbit of a warren. Its sort of like a rabbity -sama.

I like to think Kotohime is one of those people Tewi has problems pranking, just because you can't predict what she'll do next.

I'm kind of warming to Tewi. Initially I took her for a bratty child, before realizing that she's really far older than Gensokyo and is merely taking a childish form for her own advantage/amusement, much like Suwako. I almost want to put a Lovecraftian spin on her, portraying her as a primordial entity that remembers when the world was young and humans were scattered, weak and frightened. She has moved amongst them over the eons, her true nature disguised, deceiving and manipulating them for her own amusement. So sort of like Nyarlathotep? But she's not really evil, just kind of a dick at times. And it's hard to get a sense of cosmic horror from an entity that's mostly about people falling into pits. An Old One of Slapstick. The pink dress doesn't help either.

Now, Tewi has powers of luck, and Hina those of misfortune. So what kind of Dual Techs would they have together? Buffs and debuffs, or the explosive combination of opposing forces? (incidentally, thinking about that made me realize that Yuugi's ability to manipulate supernatural phenomena could mean that she's able to boost or dampen other characters' innate powers)

Ah well, picdump:

Her name will always be two-ee to me. If they wanted it otherwise, they shouldn't have spelled it like that. Also, music: a bouncy Celtic-ish remix of "Lord Usa," and the dreamy, hypnotic remix I was looking for when I found the previous 'mix.

Tacitus being Tacitus

I hope this means that my writing is best summarized as being shaped like itself, rather than being predictable. Or maybe it's my fault for not fully developing my character interpretations with an easily-referenced title.

...Have I said that before? I feel like I've said that before. That second remix is dangerous, by the way, due to potential sanity slippage. You might start remembering things you haven't done yet.

Well, she's also fundamentally a rabbit. Even if she's the First Rabbit, ancient when the world was young, from which all rabbit-kind sprang forth, she's still just a rabbit. Primordial humans were eating her kind.

Actually, this kind of goes back to Bocaj's Watership Down thing. Their Folk Hero El-ahrairrah (The Prince with a Thousand Enemies) is all about survival. To a rabbit, Everything Is Trying to Kill You. Literally. So the ultimate rabbit is all about being quick-witted and having great reflexes. The rabbits who survived are those who display mastery over their environment. It's not being powerful so much as exerting control, over yourself and others.

She can grant luck to whoever she wants to, including herself. Her power is basically "manipulation of luck", which I guess could be pretty powerful depending on how you interpret it.
Oh dear god Tewi -> Aradia is a connection I was happier without making.

Tewi-rah
That was quite nice! The ending makes it questionable just how much it's "canon" in that interpretation, but who knows. It's definitely interesting to think about.

It reminded me: The book Akyuu wrote that I can never remember the goddamn name of In Strict Sense, mentioned that Tewi "can assume the form of a human". That's interesting to think about. Maybe she didn't wake up in her burrow one day to find herself transformed into a monstrous humanoid, but rather at some point, or gradually, gained the ability to turn humanoid. Maybe for rabbits it's just a skill that they develop by leveling up their Trickery... which could mean that every animal that can turn into a humanoid youkai would have their own way to get there... But I digress.

The Perfect Memento In Some Sense also mentioned that youkai rabbits are actually very clever, which seems to clash with the perception of them as incompetent. But wait! Maybe the youkai rabbits of earth are different from those on the moon. After all, unlike their lunar brethren, they had to work for their survival, to grow old enough to turn youkai. The fact that they still seem dumb is because in spite of their cleverness, they are still simple-minded and animal-like, with simple needs. And they are perfectly okay with that. They have the ability to turn humanoid, but only do so if they need to do battle. Which they'd rather avoid, of course.

Going back a little, I imagine that it's not so much that Tewi left her warren, but rather that she never had a warren of her own... however, when she became the first youkai rabbit of the world - hell, perhaps one of the first animal youkai to ever exist - she started gathering rabbits and teaching them how to survive. And that's how she built her kingdom.

Which not only gives her a background, but also means that there's more than just her self that she cares about in the world. Jackpot!

PS: Oooh, did you choose the name "plantain-ears" because plantains are green? Because that's really clever!

... Now to somehow find a way to incorporate Kotohime into all this...

I like to think Kotohime is one of those people Tewi has problems pranking, just because you can't predict what she'll do next.
Yes.

I almost want to put a Lovecraftian spin on her, portraying her as a primordial entity that remembers when the world was young and humans were scattered, weak and frightened. But she's not really evil, just kind of a dick at times.
I was going to say that this description vaguely fits a whole bunch of characters that need the depth more desperately than Tewi, but now I can't actually think of any. Besides Yukari. Not that Yukari is one who desperately needs anything, don't get me wrong. This whole part just seems to already be canon. Now, while it's "interesting" to think of Tewi as being on the same level as Yukari, I imagine that Yukari would actually have goals and ideals of some sort, making her take a proactive stance to manipulating, whereas Tewi is content just living life with her rabbits.

Now, Tewi has powers of luck, and Hina those of misfortune. So what kind of Dual Techs would they have together?
Antipode!

picdump
  • "Typical Tewi" is pretty typical! Good picture for representing her, perhaps...
  • The following may or may not be. It's hard to imagine her being sad, or letting herself be intimate with someone in a way that lets her guard down, but it is also said in the Compendium of Strict Senseis that she's very emotional. I can definitely see her enjoying Kaguya snuggles.
  • "Acrobatic Tewi" is... something! It's kinda really cool, but I'm also not sure if it'd be fitting for profile-linkage.
  • "Kind of manic" Tewi definitely is, though. I kind of like this one a lot.
  • "Aggressively-grinning" is badass! From that video I linked to, too. It's all coming full-circle!
  • No particular opinion on the following two, I guess they are decent for the badass side of things.
  • The "uniform" picture doesn't seem to fit her stylistically in my eyes.
  • Left 4 Dead thing is badass again...
  • That IS a big-ass hammer.
  • Stuff stuff stuff oh hey that's the same artist as the video again
  • Meganekko Tewi is too cute. Like, literally. Argh.
  • Hoodlum Tewi on the other hand is very fitting. Good style for her, too.
  • And my god based on that title I expected an old hag and not critical levels of hotness.

I hope this means that my writing is best summarized as being shaped like itself, rather than being predictable.
I'm not sure what I meant. I think in part thanks to your avatar, I always imagine you as this big, badass intellectual old man sitting in a huge chair with a glass of wine in hand, enthusiastically musing with the utmost dignity about flying moe girls.

I like your style, is what I'm saying.

...

by the way, what about those megamari songs

add to profiles y/n

And if so, where does Reisen's stage song fit, because it just sounds so incredibly much like Tewi and the stage is full of Tewi lookalikes.

Usasasasasa~ You should see the look on your face!

I have to say, that is an awesome laugh you've given her there.

Maybe for rabbits it's just a skill that they develop by leveling up their Trickery... which could mean that every animal that can turn into a humanoid youkai would have their own way to get there... But I digress.

The only one I've seen doing it so far would be Rin (shifting voluntarily between cat and humanoid form) but there may be something to it.

Well, cats have been domestic animals for forever, so turning humanoid must come pretty natural to them simply by proximity... A cat turns humanoid as it becomes more and more like its guardians, a rabbit turns humanoid so it can fool its human predators...

That would make sense as a survival trait, and I'd say she holds surviving to be her highest priority. Enough to unintentionally become quasi-immortal, anyway. As for her reasons for granting people good luck, I do think she can be charitable if she feels like it and it doesn't put her at a disadvantage.

Turning humanoid has always struck me as just a simple kind of magic that youkai naturally learn. I've never seen it as involuntary or even something they need a reason for. Part of being a youkai is that you can look human if you choose, other than a few giveaways like tails or ears. That's pretty much how it works in folklore too.

Fawriel Since: Jan, 2001
#712: Jan 9th 2011 at 7:14:58 AM

Yeah, I guess it's like that. I just started thinking about how maybe different kinds of animals go differently about growing humanoid. And it's quite possible that only certain animals are even capable of it, right?

Tewi is totally a rabbit ninja, sneaking behind Reisen to scare her and setting up distractions and traps. Plus, she knows everything about what Eirin is doing in the shady lab behind her clinic, Lunarian security systems be damned.

The plantain-ears thing actually comes from Reisen's profile. Udonge means something like plantain flower and I could see Tewi as the kind of person who would use it as a possibly friendly mocking nickname.

One of the things that strikes me about Tewi is why she even start being in cahoooooots with Eirin and Kaguya. I think it was in CiLR where Eirin says that the agreement was that she'd share her knowledge with the youkai rabbits. I'm not so sure if that's what actually happens since Eirin seems like she's too busy to sit down and give lessons to the rabbits although I wonder how much Tewi has learned.

But it got me thinking that more than just being a bratty prankster, she honestly cares about the other rabbit youkai. If you think about her age, she must have seen countless rabbits die, including those from her litter and any children she may have had. And if you think about it that way, maybe her pranking of Reisen isn't just to be bratty but to try to help her. Lunar rabbits seem like they lack cunning comparatively to earth ones since I doubt the Moon has a everything trying to kill you environment. But since Reisen is on earth now, Tewi might think its high time she got a curriculum in good old fashioned rabbit craftiness and twitchiness. After all the pit traps Tewi has dropped Reisen into, Reisen is going to become super-good at detecting and dodging traps. The older folk have to look out for the youngsters after all.

Also, I like Fawriel's ideas so I'm thinking that could be what "really" happened and the story she told Reisen was boosting up the pathos to mess with her.

@Clarste: You said it better than I could have.

Even if she is unintentionally helping, this does fit well what was stated in her profile above. Every encounter with a trickster, whether good or bad, is a lesson learned. As long as you don't fall for the same trick twice, that's a step forward.

The plantain-ears thing actually comes from Reisen's profile. Udonge means something like plantain flower and I could see Tewi as the kind of person who would use it as a possibly friendly mocking nickname.
Well, "Udonge(in)" is a nickname given to Reisen by Eirin, so that just raises the question of why she gave her that name. Plantains are bananas, which are vaguely shaped like bunny ears, and they are green. Like in English, "green" can be used in Japanese to call someone inexperienced and naive. In German, there's even the expression "noch grün hinter den Ohren sein" - "to still be green behind one's ears."

So there's that!

As for the "in" at the end that Eirin actually rarely uses, I dunno. I'm trying browsing through kanji that have "in" as an on-reading, but I'm not finding much of anything that makes sense. 恁 apparently means "like, so", or "think"... 殷 means "blooming" or such... 胤 means "offspring"... 贇 is "pretty". 陰 means shadow and apparently also has a bunch of meanings relating to being hidden and stuff. Or the private parts, apparently. I mostly noticed this one because it also has "negative" in the physical sense as a meaning. ... Huuuh, here are two different kanji used in the word for meteorite, like 隕, which means "to fall (from the sky)"... that would make some sort of sense. Seems to be used at the start of the word, though, rather than the end.

OH WELL.

Tewi is also basically hovering around Eirin most of the time and reading some of her notes, and sharing that knowledge with her rabbit "sisters".
Now, let's not disregard the possibility/fact that there are male youkai.

Haha, that reminds me of something I forgot to add to my Gensokyo write-up. Something about how male youkai exist just as well as female ones. It's just that somehow it's only female ones that are ever encountered during the big incidents.

Nobody ever questions this.

Tewi Inaba ~ Look At The Pretty Bunny

Tewi is ancient. She has outwitted a thousand predators, and outrun a hundred hunters. She might even be a contemporary of Yukari Yakumo; that would certainly be an interesting tie to examine. Do they know each other - does Yukari sometimes have tea with the rabbit of rabbits? (And how does that tie into the events of Imperishable Night? Did Tewi intentionally withhold Eientei from Yukari?) Certainly, she's even more clever than the gap hag, due to the fact that she's found the perfect way to live - messing around with everyone else, eternally young and sprightly.

She's the only reason Kaguya and Eirin haven't been found yet by the Lunarians, you know. If not for her clan of rabbits heroically defending Eientei (notice how the modern version of her name, Tei, is in there - they named the place after her), they'd have nowhere to live. She rescues those people who are lost in the Bamboo Forest whenever she happens to be wandering, and gives them good luck free of charge. What a pure and charitable soul!

She's even adopted the moon bunny, Udongein. Hailing from an oppressed society where the bunnies are nothing more than slaves to the Lunarians, Udonge was unprepared for the haughty draught of freedom until Tewi the merciful took pity on her and decided to befriend her. She gives sage advice to the moon princess, assists the lunar doctor with her medicines by directing her rabbits to gather the finest herbs, and yet is still able to assist with the traditional pounding of the mochi. What an altruist!

But putting her long and distinguished history aside, Tewi is notable because she's won. Every youkai struggles to get to the top, to become stronger and more terrifying, and here's Tewi hopping around in the forest, dancing under the branches and bouncing out to terrify lost travelers, and if you didn't know better you'd point and laugh like an idiot because you think that Tewi's weak. But she's cunning, which is even better, and she's exactly where she wants to be in life. The rabbits understand that she's the leporidae paragon, and so she gets to do whatever she wants to. Prank Udongein? Sure, why not? Sneak out of Eientei with Kaguya to scare Eirin half-to-death? Sounds fun! Give a lost child an extra dose of good luck? It's not like it hurts anyone to go the extra mile.

She'd probably help out anyone who got spirited away by Yukari, if she came across them, and they were polite and not jerks who needed a lesson in manners. She'd still be your best friend, just one that pushes you into pit traps until you say "I'm sorry, ma'am. Please don't break my legs." And then everything would be smiles and joy and beer, all around! You know, life around Tewi must always be interesting, given how strong her personality and emotions are - Akyuu compared her to a fairy. Tewi x Cirno, OTP? But I can see her as best pals with Kaguya, easily, even if she does mess around with the princess sometimes. It's all in good fun.

Sure, there will be consequences to messing around with everyone. But if you're fast and canny enough, consequences happen to other people. And besides, they're all temporary. Tewi endures. And that's why she's the best character in all of Touhou. She should be the main character instead of that lazy miko and the crazy witch, you know. Touhou 13 - Arboreal Inabaism! I'm sure that if enough of you write to ZUN, he'd put the beautiful and intelligent Tewi Inaba into the games as the main character! It's not like you're doing anything important here, anyway, trying to figure out how we in Gensokyo live with the third-hand information ZUN gets from the gap hag - so go! Petition for Tewi Inaba As Protagonist!

Go forth, my loyal minions, in the name of Tewi!

The heck?

I found this write-up on my computer this morning, and there are now rabbit pawprints all around my desk, as well as a pit trap under my chair. Note to self: invest in an alarm system. And rabbit traps.

I've heard that in Asian mythology, beasts take the forms of humans as they grow older because being a human makes one closer to enlightenment. It's like Spiral Energy - if you want to evolve into a higher understanding of the universe, you must take on a humanoid form.
