I have a question about a "visual language of manga" thing that came up while reading Yotsuba&!, vol. 3 with my niece. Figured someone here could probably explain:

On this page, what's the deal with the circles in the 3rd and 4th panels? Is that a standard visual trope in manga? What does it signify, exactly? I'm also a bit confused as to why Koiwai-san seems so... nervous? about the guinea pigs.

They're called Love Bubbles. It's mainly a shojo trope. Koiwai's not scared, he's having a Cuteness Overload

If I had a daughter like Yostuba, I'd be nervous too.

I think the bubbles are just supposed to add atmosphere of some kind.

I suspect there's also a tie-in of some sort with the unusual sign that adds the connotation of "love" to the guinea pigs.

How is Ena's name pronounced? I'm fairly sure it's something like AY-nah, but my niece thinks it's EE-nah. Who's right?

Oh, and Koiwai's name: pronounced KOY-why ("koi" rhyming with "toy"), right?

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced EH-nah, like the 'e' in ten, or end. But I am by no means an expert in Japanese so I could be wrong.
