Well, I've been favorably surprised before. I guess I'll regard it as on-the-list. It's not like I can't afford to download anything unless I'm really sure it's worth finishing, anyway, my computer has more free space than I know what to do with.

I think I'll give Muv Luv a miss though; I have no problem with very long works, provided they're good all the way through. I don't want to sit through "painfully generic" to get to the worthwhile parts.

The protagonist of G Senjou No Maou is a villain only by technicality. He's a fairly nice guy. The situation is complicated.

[up][up] The thing with Muv Luv is that the painful generic parts are relevant to the enjoyment of the good parts; if you take away the generic harem shit, the sequels wouldn't be as enjoyable. ML is kinda hard to get into anyway (hell, I was also iffy in getting into it, but now Muv-Luv Alternative is one of my top VNs), so I wouldn't recommend it for those who are only starting out on VNs. Maybe you can try it out once you can stomach the painful stuff.

G-Senjou no Maou's protagonist is rather... complicated. I won't say that he's a particularly nice guy because he does have a couple of moments that made me deeply uncomfortable, especially in the beginning (Tsubaki route) but in the end, he's definitely a person I can respect.

Does anyone know where I could find a working download of Sharin No Kuni? I'm not sure if the one at Eroge Download works (a lot of other people are having trouble with it too,) and when I tried to torrent a copy, there was something wrong with the downloader for the program that would change my locale to Japan, and it would tell me there was an error and stop downloading partway through. If anyone has a source that they know works, I'd appreciate it.

[up] Erogedownload's stuff almost always works; Sharin no Kuni is just rather hard to install. Also, just set your locale to Japanese permanently. It doesn't affect your computer except by changing your backslashes to yen symbols, and you won't need to use AppLocale or anything. Besides, some VNs won't work with AppLocale.

Could you explain how to install it? Eroge Download doesn't provide instructions, and the torrent does, but doesn't work. What I've got at this point (with my location set to Japan,) is an icon on my desktop which I suspect is supposed to be the game, but is labelled in gibberish and gives me an "information" box full of gibberish if I try to open it.

I'm afraid I'm not nearly as computer savvy as I'd like to be.

[up] Not location, locale. Scroll down here, this should explain it. Also, if you're using the .iso file, make sure it's always mounted while you're playing the game. Sharin no Kuni doesn't work without the disc, for some reason.

Well, I changed my locale, but it doesn't seem to have resolved any of the issues I'm having with getting the game to work. The icon is still labelled in gibberish and gives the same message if I try to open it, with the file mounted.

Since the download came with no install instructions, I really don't know what I should be doing differently.

I got the game to run not by using the shortcut but rather by using the file in the folder itself. Delete the shortcut and try opening syarin.exe directly.

Finally got it to work; all I really needed to do was reinstall it after changing my locale to get a non-gibberish version, and apply the patch to that. Thanks for the help.

Yay.

Beware pacing problems.

Plot-wise, the game is pretty good but the slice-of-life parts are unfathomably draggy. I found it useful to set aside time to play in large sittings rather than intermittently because the story goes nowhere for such long stretches that it eventually gets really hard to find the motivation to pick up where you stopped.

Looking for a Visual Novel that is similar in vein to Katawa Shoujo. Recommendations for ones with heavy emphasis on slice of life and romance between girls would be nice as well.

Romance between girls as in yuri, or did you just mean romance?

Might want to try Clannad. Kinda long though.

Hoshizora no Memoria and ef - a fairy tale of the two are my primary recs. I don't have any yuri recs except Sono Hana, but that one's a nukige.

I most definitely meant yuri, sorry.

You don't really have much to choose from then, so far as I know.

Arha just doesn't want to recommend Katahane because he hates it. Haven't played it yet though, but you can try that I suppose.

I wouldn't inflict Katahane on my worst enemy, possibly because their taste would be so bad they might actually like it. That said, Katahane is not really a yuri visual novel in the first place. The yuri is just one of the things that makes it terrible.

Anyway, Hoshizora would be a decent place to look, I suppose.

Slice of Life? Yuri?

If you can handle Tastes Like Diabetes, Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo is right for you. Just don't expect a lot of plot.

1-5 and 7 are all translated with 6 and 8 currently in editing.

That ones SFW spinoff appears to not have been translated. Any other recommendations?

For yuri, I don't know anything else recommendable. (I must insist that you should at least try the Sono Hana series though.)

For Slice of Life, along with what has already been said, I'll recommend Quartett (short and sweet), Kira Kira (slice of band life), and Symphonic Rain (You'll want to turn on autoplay for this one. Also, don't play if you get sleepy on rainy days.).

If you're looking for anything romance, ef - a fairy tale of the two is my highest recommendation. For slice of life, go with what Encrypted said, plus I'll throw in Hoshizora no Memoria if you're looking for something on the comedy/supernatural side.

Jumping into this thread now.

So I was reading about visual novels on another site, and someone mentioned Katahane.

I haven't heard about it before, and know nothing about it. Is it any good?

Alternatively, can someone recommend a visual novel with the following traits:

  • no explicit sexual content, or sexual content is skippable (I'm okay with romance, but I'd rather the sex scenes be at least skippable.)
  • something that's got decent art quality (i.e. nothing like it was drawn by a 13-year-old with a deviantArt account but no sense of taste)
  • something with a filesize that's not too big (preferably below 1 GB, but I'll go over if there's something good enough.)
  • a good introduction to the visual novel genre
  • isn't horribly depressing
