too-long page repair.:

Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500, 000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them.

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Here's a list of the pages impacted. Also see this page: Overly Long Pages

I thought making subpages to make other pages smaller was a regular practice. Or are said subpages getting too big too?
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!
I guess you are talking about the fact that some of these are subpages, like WMG. Yeah, those need to be broken up in the cases shown on the list. In the past it has been done like WMG.Overweight Pages Are Heavy 1, WMG.Overweight Pages Are Heavy 2, etc.

Edit: Ninjad.

Some of these Main trope pages should have been divided by media long ago.

The WMG, TT, and IJBM, pages would be more difficult to be broken up, there's no alphabetic, thematic, or any other order, so we would eiter have to arbitarily set up two or more pages for them with the same purpose, or archive the content, making the old entries uncommentable, or cut lots of their text, like in the forums.

I think there are some that would be tragically missed, like the legit WMG pages.

Also, should't you add some of the pages with slightly less than 500 000 characters, just to be on the safe side when those pages get some more content? Like, starting with 400 000?

Well, I know Warhammer 40K is already broken up into alphabetic groups on the page. So we should make Warhammer40000 A-D and so forth?

And The Contributors is uneditable and so not a problem, right?
Cure Candy
I don't like A-D ect I would love to sort by Types of tropes like

Easily done via indexing on what should go where and Name Spaces for easy access via the top bar.

I am really suprised that Negima! isn't up there (its already got folders by letter)

I had been meaning to ask if I could get agreement to split Meaningful Name for a while now, but I wasn't sure how to go about it.

If no one objects, I would be happy to split that page by Media type.

Go for it.

Yeah, Media type where possible. I suppose it would be possible to classify WMGs in some way, but this is something we need to get done, not debate over for a long time. The simplest, clearest divisions should work.

^^ Good point on the length. The list now shows items with more than 400, 000 html characters.

Possibly dumb question, but would the standard be to put the subpages in (for example) "Anime/MeaningfulName" or "MeaningfulName/Anime"?

Meaningful Name/Anime.

Media namespaces would be for works, for example an anime that is called Meaningful Name.

Ok now Tsundere is affected... how will that work? It has Two types A and B along with other.

  • Type A
  • Type B
  • Other

Or by media and type? Or just by media and still folder the types?

Edit what about YKTTW? (That place always crashes my phone due to shear size)

I don't understand - how do we edit pages that crash the server if they crash the server when we try to edit them?

Tsundere definitely shouldn't be split to 38 different pages.

We could just merge the types, as I suggeted in the current crowner. Though it got sort of voted down, that was before splitting was a must.

Those types are just two common variations, not absolutes to begin with, as it is proved by the huge "Other" foder.

Edit:

[up] Dunno, but I would like to imagine that Fast Eddie supports the servers on his shoulders in an Atlas Pose, until we split them.

This imagery kinda makes you want to work faster.

Well the Other folder is mostly those who switch between the types though character development.

Where practical on tropes, split by medium. We've got lots of precedent for it. There's no sense trying to do Type A and Type B divisions when people can't agree on them.

Edit: On the "how do we edit" thing, it seems you're saying that clicking "Save" is what crashes the server, not clicking "Edit". In that case, to avoid crashes, you'd have to hold the main article open (or just copy the source) while you trim it off to subpages, then save the trimmed article.

[down] Agreed. Tropers Do It Without Notability? Really?

Some of the top ones seem like things that wouldn't be any loss locked or even much of one if cut.

[up][up] I guess media pages with all 3 types on one page. (I can't do it atm I don't trust my phone to copy and paste)

[up] Wait Wait Wait Trope Tales Fan Nickname is over 700, 000 letters.....

Couldn't you just use "view source" to make the split pages and ask a mod to fix/unlock the main article afterward?

[up][up][up] It wouldn't hurt "our mission" to cut them, but they are this big exactly because people love them, so if there is any other way to save them, they should be saved both for their traffic, and for avoiding the shitstorm that would happen if their favorite toy would be taken away.

edited 30th Nov '10 11:39:38 AM by EternalSeptember

[up]Well, my point was mainly the locking part. I'm not saying we should just delete them because they're long.

[up][up]That sounds like it should work.

I am highly indifferent to any storms, shit or otherwise, that would be raised by cutting people's favorite toys. That said, we have to make sure that the pages aren't reverted by well-meaning nincompoops, so locking and splitting is probably the only way we can make them work.

The top entries, for example, are almost entirely "fun" or subjective articles, with no real value to the wiki.

[up] Character driven shows that have Loads and Loads of Characters and Fantasy Kitchen Sink and such will almost always have bigger character pages than mains because every single character is a mass of Character Tropes each... which says something about the series not the page.

Could someone look at Meaningful Name/Anime and let me know if I've got the right idea before I continue?

I think we're going to have to implement some sort of Cast Herd system on the characters pages. Possibly on a per-work basis.
Cure Candy
Most Character pages for Long Runners already do that. Bleach has 4 Pages divided by groups, Naruto has 3 and Negima has 2 (Ala Alba and then the rest).
