Game of Thrones [Potential Book Spoilers]:

Long Live the King
@Swish how many of those people do you think are going to be watching S4?

I'm of the opinion that anyone who is going to give up on the series after the Red Wedding, probably gave up after Ned's death...

The only way people stop watching the series is if season 3 is piss-poor overall... And while that's certainly possible, I just don't see it happening.

Regarding Quentyn, I would think GRRM could do without the extra characters by skipping the Dorne chapters and compress them into a single character. That way we could still see the whole Martell X Targ pact without having so much extra characters. Especially how poor Quentyn gets killed off just like that

Seriously, Arianne. We didn't need a POV from Hotah or Oakheart.

Hotah's entire purpose seems to be so we can have Doran as close to being a POV character as we can get without giving away the end of the Feast's Dorne arc. I'm pretty clueless as to why he was a POV character in Dance and not Arianne, especially considering that they two of them saw the same events in that chapter.

Yeah, it personally felt like the Arys and Hotah chapters were pointless. At first I thought he gave us Arys' perspective and not Arianne's because we weren't supposed to be sure of she actually likes him or just uses him to get to Myrcella, but then we get an Arianne chapter anyway so the entire Arys chapter is pointless.

There's also a Hotah chpater in Dance where his entire job is to stand there and look at the sand snakes argue with Doran and Arianne. Unless she knows something that wasn't told in that chapter and Gurn is keeping as a surprise, that was very much redundant.

Yeah, well, Arianne's going to have chapters in TWOW anyway.

Minor POVs still anger me. Most of them being entirely pointless only enhances the anger.

Oakhearts' really have no purpose at all, I forgot he even was a POV. There's no reason Arrianne couldn't have covered all of those chapters.

Hotah isn't that bad- he's sort of helpful for having a non-perceptive character through which the reader can make out what is actually going on- the problem is that that last part is missing.

Hotah is "that bad." He's the blandest, most boring POV in the books.

Also, we should be having this conversation in the book thread.

I think Gurm's said in retrospect he'd cut out Oakheart's POV, can't remember if he said the same about Hotah. I can see why he did it - he wanted to introduce Arianne in a previously-seen character's chapter (as I think is what happens for most characters) but there was no-one else there to fill that role.

The North Remembers
if there's a happy ending of some kind, it means the characters managed to get to it in spite of everyone around them failing. Why should I care about Superman when I know that he'll use his power of the week to save the day with all the good guys health and happy and all the bad guys in jail?

That depends if you care at all about the characters who actually do reach the ending.
Talos guide you.

There's not going to be a happy ending, there's going to be *an* ending. Which means:

  • Someone is on the Iron Throne and peace is returned to the realm, or the Seven Kingdoms split apart with seven kings like before the conquest.

  • The Others have been dealt with, either through victory, defeat or a form of coexistance.

  • Every secret plan we know of but don't know the details - mainly Varys and Littlefinger - has been revealed and the plotter either succeed or failed.

  • Major characters character arches resolved, especially the remaining Stark children.

  • Gurm dies at age 105 with a belly full of mead and...ah...you know.

It's not a happy ending. You're not going to see king Jon and Queen Dany on the throne with Lord next to Paramour Rickon as their hand, holding Littlefinger's severed head while Master of Coin Tyrion comes home to his loving wife Tysha. But you're going to see these characters reach some meaningful conclusion.

Liberty in the Mother not Daughter of Order
Alternatively:

  • All contenders for the Iron Throne are dead and the position of King defunct.
  • The Others have won.
  • Every secret plan is revealed, and failed.
  • Every character's character arch is resolved with them dying.
  • Gurm dies at age 105 with a belly full of mead and...ah...you know.

it's going to be a repeat of the ME 3 debacle with half the fanbase claiming that books 1-6 are retroactively awful and somehow the enjoyment they had in the past was stricken from history because book 7 had an unsatisfying conclusion or something.

The series ends with Bran having to choose between destroying the others and taking magic away from the world forever, making them his minions or having them rape every human to produce other/human hybrids. The role of the starchild will be played by a ghostly apparition of Varys' balls.

I posted this a few months ago in the ASoIaF thread:

My theory: The Citadel houses a giant mass of energy that takes the form of a child. It created the Others billions of years ago to periodically wipe out living creatures and turn them into Others, to keep society from creating they're own Other-like creatures. Jon Snow, recently revived from his assassination with Other parts, meets the child. The child explains all this and then the two merge into one, and everything becomes part-human and part-Other.
It may be me skimming through them, but the characters of Oakheart and Hotah did not register to me at all UNTIL my 2nd reading. Oakheart should've been in the beginning chapters to be killed off.

For the series(hopefully ever gets that far), they should condense the plot straight away and maybe skip Young Griff to just make Dany the focus.

Dorne can actually be summed up pretty nicely for five to six five minuets segments, the same way season two handled Theon. You don't really need to see Doran looking at naked children or whats-her-face feeling shitty in her tower, just a sexposition scene with Arys, the scene where he dies and the scene where Doran reveals his plan. Maybe another one or two to give us exposition about who he actually is but that won't take a lot of time either.

Very cute. [lol]

Without going way off-topic with our semi-on-topic book discussion: the main problem with Mass Effect 3 wasn't just a bad ending, it was an ending that derailed characters, made no logical sense, and went against the spirit of the series. Imagine this series ending with everybody happy and friends in King's Landing, in particular Arya as a pretty princess and Tyrion as a tall handsome prince, because the Others were shipped back to Valyria, were they always wanted to peacefully return to.

Why does this finale make no sense? Why did I waste time liking these characters when they stop acting like themselves? And these novels aren't interactive, the lack of a meaningful choice at the end was the big point.

And I'm not even a fan of the game. And then, seemingly nobody online is a fan of things they like.

We seriously need to extend the episodes from ten to twelve a season, ala Rome. That is the only way I see that they can truly fit so many of the plot threads from Feast onwards.

Mass Effec, urgh. I'm not the one to rage online about relatively trivial stuff, but the ending seriously piss me off. That is all I will say here.

I would prefer they extend the length to 12 episodes myself... Primarily because then they could add in a good number of the "minor" plot points that are going on.

But I don't see any threat of them not having enough time to tell the story due to the small season length, especially since it's already confirmed that the content of Storms is going to be told over two seasons... And it's likely that Feast/Dragons will be told over 3+ seasons(and presented in chronological order).

If they stick to that plan, they could fit every "important" plot point in the series without needing to extend the season length...

[up]I wonder if they'll release a chronological Feast of Dragons once the TV show gets that far? I imagine there'd be a lot of demand for it.

They definitely should. All that book-switching you have to do to read it chronologically is... bad.

That's just an enormous can of worms GRRM would be opening. Remember, none of the books takes place in strict chronological sequence chapter-by-chapter. Some characters are ahead or behind by others by months. There is no need for 100% chronological ordering.
