XKCD: It's more than a comic:

@Nohbody: Although not explicitly stated as such, covering the planet in a layer of soda cans that thick would undoubtedly eliminate all organic life via any of numerous mechanisms.
Ironically, the pursuit of the definition of happiness does not appear to be a happiness-maximizing behavior.

Took me a while to get it, but I got it. 2 combines with 2 to make 4, which combines with the other 4 to make 8, which combines with the other 8 to make 16.

2048 is some kind of slide-puzzle game where you merge numbers into greater and greater powers of 2.

I tried it a few days ago, for some reason it never hooked me.

I learned about it from somebody on Doomworld over the weekend.

This is the game in question. It is insanely addicting.

The faster you go, the slower time goes. The same rule applies to how close you are to a gravitating body. Astronauts ultimately experience time slower because the effects of velocity on time dilation are greater than the effects of decreased gravity. You have to be much farther from earth, apparently, for the two to cancel out, afterwards it guess you start experiencing time faster. But what point is that at?

re 2048, I read that the best way to win is to cluster all your highest value tiles in one corner. Good luck.

I've been hooked for the last few hours, thanks. Has anyone been able to beat it yet? My highest tile is 512, and highest score is 7092.

Not Actually Indie
You mean the rich countries that don't clearcut ginormous swathes of rainforest to make room for farming purposes, like Brazil? Or countries where they burn cow (or local equivalent) chips for heat in spite of the noxious stuff it releases?

The deforestation in Brazil is done mainly to make room for cattle ranches to serve first world markets (rainforest can actually regenerate from slash and burn subsistence agriculture, but won't regrow over pasture, and local markets don't provide the demand that makes the ranches profitable.) In terms of air pollution, people who're burning buffalo chips for fuel are responsible for much less than people who're end-users of a few tons of coal per year, leaving carbon dioxide out of the equation entirely.

Is making the developed world poor again a viable solution to environmental damage? Hell no. Would it actually result in lower levels of environmental damage if implemented? Hell yes.
...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.

Didn't cattle farming cause the Sahara Desert? The beef industry is one of the biggest offenders in environmental damage.

I think the Sahara has been that way for ages, like, since before cattle farming was a thing. Of course, there's desertification of sub Saharan Africa

It tells you you won but you have the option to stop or continue.

I'm pretty sure the Sahara is just in the correct latitude for deserts, but it has expanded at least in part thanks to our efforts.

Your thinking about the Sahel, which expanded once the nomads who helped graze it disappeared.
