[up][up]Do we EVER!

Actually I wonder how common it is among the Word Bears to go heretic from Lorgar's particular brand of religion. Somewhat, I'd guess.

I thought it was the Alpha Legion that used Imperial battle cries and whatnot to troll Imperial enemies.

Haven't had the chance to check out the new Chaos Codex yet, but I've heard Forgefiends are a points-trap, and that Havocs are better choices.

Obviously, this is like, third- or maybe even fourth-hand information.

[up][up]I considered trading in the Forgefiends for 2 squads of 2 Nurgle Obliterators. That would free up enough points to turn my bikers into Nurglites or something.

Then again, 16 S8 AP 3 shots a turn is pretty hard to argue with.

That all you got?
So how exactly do points add up in Tabletop Warhammer? I know that each unit is worth a certain number of points, but how do they determine that?

[up] Models or units have a listed points value, as do all the upgrades available to them. Then you add those together and ta-da, your army list.

The mechanics guys tend to work it out through a lot of playtesting and comparison to what is already there, except when writing Skaven, in which case they do that and then subtract 3.

Is there a standard point value people usually play at, or does it vary a lot from game to game?
Only the sun has stopped.

[up] I don't play myself but I understand that there are standard levels of about 750 and 2000. Larger games tend to use Apocalypse rule sets as I understand it.

Reading around, people from the UK seem to like 1500-point games, while US players seem to find their sweet spot at 1850. Remember though that the higher the points, the bigger likelihood that your games will take upwards of two hours to finish.

My own army is a 1750-point army, by the way.

So how big would a 1850 point battle be? Like a few squads, maybe some vehicles?

I want Kat's glasses!
If that can give you an idea, I have a 1000-point Ork list here:
  • Boss: ~100 pts
  • One squad of lots of cheap guys: ~230pts
  • One squad of just enough cheap guys to fit a vehicle: ~80pts
  • One light vehicle to carry them: 50pts
  • One squad of heavy, solid guys: 220 pts
  • Two small squadron of flying bikes with rockets: 180pts
  • One tank/APC: ~140 pts
So 850 would get more squads than that, another tank...

They Called Me Mad!! I decided to show them all; but when I looked on my works, oh mighty, I despaired: for it made me realize they were right.

So a Space Marine thing would be like two squads of Tactical Marines, maybe a Rhino and a Predator, then the Captain or some other hero, with scouts and maybe one assault squad?

Well, from memory:
  • Captain: 100+ points, likely 115.
  • 10-man tactical squad: 170+ points —> 340+ points for two of them.
  • metal boxes start at 35 points each, so you could buy one and still fit under 500 points.
  • Then you get in some heavies: A minimal Terminator squad is 200 points, a Land Raider is 250, I don't remember the cost of other vehicles though.

Souts are a bit cheaper. If you really want "cheese" at 500 points, you could take two "naked" squads of 5 scouts (75 pts each), a captain or librarian (100 points), and have juuuust enough points to squeeze in a Land Raider.

^^At 1000 points you would see 1 HQ, 2 squads of kitted out Tac Marines each with a Rhino, a couple Predators (they are cheap), and maybe some Terminators.

^EDIT: Huh, didn't know Tac Squads were that cheap. At 1000 points you could probably throw in a third squad, a Dreadnought, and a second HQ.

My 1750 5th Edition Space Marine List: (with the pictures of the actual models I have) [1]

It's not a competitive list, and something I bring to pick-me-up games. Mobile armies utterly trounce me for example, and 6th Edition with its Hull Points haven't been kind to it either.
