You guys actually did invent the bagpipes as a form of psychological warfare. They were originally used to sound like the cry of some sort of evil spirit and terrify the enemy. They also happen to make decent musical instruments when used properly.
Bag pipes are awesome.

No, you have to hate it. It's like the French with their accordion music and the Irish with their Riverdance. Oh, and Americans with songs that sound like this. You observe it, associate the whole country with it and then hate every aspect of it. That's how international cultural cooperation works.

If that's not how it works anymore, I'll have to learn everything about the whole world again. Except that I still won't have to learn anything about Finland 'cause no one's heard of us even though I'm shouting about us all the time. And I'm not going to learn anything about Sweden 'cause it's Sweden.

(Oh, hello, new people; hope you enjoy the open, loving atmosphere here. No hostility, no unnecessary generalisations or hatred of other cultures. Welcome, welcome.)

Finland is awesome too. :D

Best Of, you know all the location-y stuff. Do we have any tropers from the PRC?

And Sweden is awesome too. :D

Sweden gave us Ikea.

Finland gave us Nokia (and Nokia Maps, which is pretty bloody brilliant).

Too awesome.

I don't have access to a database of where everyone's from, if that's what you mean. I pay attention whenever someone mentions where they're from (including in their location tag.) I don't really know why.

I have a vague recollection that there were some tropers back in IJBM who claimed to have been from the PRC, but I don't even remember what names they used here, 'cause I don't think I ever saw more than a couple of posts from anyone who claimed to be from there.

And now some regular troper that I've been talking to for years is going to step up say that that they're from the PRC and point out three dozen posts where they mention it that I replied to with a quote.

I would claim to be from PRC just for fun, except I don't even know what that stands for. tongue

Sweden is great. I may be biased in that regard, though!

People's Republic of China, Peony.

Not to be confused with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Kinkajou is from China, according to the troper map. There were others, but that's the only name I recognise. (Well, Martello's tag was also in China, but it was a US military installation where he was stationed and I don't think that really counts.)

We're allowed in China? Don't we spread western ideals that may undermine the great one-ness and unity of the Chinese state that is all-glorious?

[up]We've never been blocked in China, as far as we know.

@Telcontar: You should've told me that before. I've probably wasted some friendliness on your cursed Swedish blood.

I don't want to ruin the joke by explaining it, but just to be sure: yes, I'm joking. Nordic people (with the exception of Swedes) are supposed to hate Sweden. That's just how it is. That said, sometimes they do deserve it. If you don't believe me, just look at the Swedish football and ice hockey teams and count how many times they get goals from lucky shots that weren't even meant to go in. A disproportionate number of all luck in sports is wasted on the Swedish.

@Besty: Would you be highly offended if I told you I only recently discovered that Finland is not in fact another name for the Netherlands? *cowers*

How the hell could it be another name for the Netherlands... It's got nothing to do with the Netherlands. What.

Hey, in my highly distorted mental map of Europe I had Finland and the Netherlands placed next to each other. I knew there was only one country in the area, so I determined they must be the same place, 'specially as the Netherlands has more than one name already (I am gonna be really embarrassed if it turns out Holland is in a different location).

...No, I don't know why either.

Holland isn't the same as the Netherlands. It is part of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is to the North-West of Germany and North of Belgium. Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are often called "the Low Countries" because of their elevation.

Finland is located between Sweden and Russia, North of Estonia (with the Gulf of Finland, which is part of the Baltic Sea, between them) and to the South of the northeasternmost bits of Norway.

The Nordic countries are Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. If you want to associate them (us) with some other region of Europe, I think the most sensible association is with Britain, as Britain used to be ruled by Nordic invaders.

The question is, do the Nordic countries want to rule us again?

And I thought people from my country were bad at geography.

@ Normz. Nah. Some children can't name the other European capitals.

I'm always shocked when I find a European who can't locate or even list the Nordic countries or the former European members of the USSR or the member states of the EU. All the way through the Finnish education system there's nothing that you learn about as much as European history and geography. Well, maybe Finnish, but that's it. You have less Finnish history than European history in the Finnish education system, and that's how it should be.

I can sort of understand that someone would have a hard time learning the very small countries like Liechtenstein and Andorra, or if someone had some trouble identifying the former members of Yugoslavia, I can almost get that. But there's no excuse for a European not even knowing where, say, Hungary, Belarus and Latvia are.

The European capitals are easy! Shanghai, Oregon, Canada, Hamburg, Lemonade, The Joker, Chernobyl, the number 7, San Fransisco, 1989, and Atlantis! Does anyone really not know those?

I play Xanatos Speed Chess. I usually lose in three moves.

Do you include Britain in that? Because, like, you know how my countrymen feel about you Continentals.

But I can name most of the capitals!

Ummm...

Prague, Helsinki, Stockholm, Lisboa, Madrid, Berlin, Paris, Bruxelles, The Hague (or Amsterdam, depending on what you define as a capital), Luxembourg, Rome, Warsaw, London, Dublin, Vienna, Budapest, Athens, Bucharest, Sofia, Riga...

Ummm. I forget the rest. I can only name 20/27.

Now that I've upset myself by thinking about European ignorance of geography, at least I can bounce back by reminiscing about some of the FB and Twitter quotes I saw from across the pond when Russia invaded Georgia. (If you don't remember that or didn't see any of that hilarious stuff, there were Americans (though I assume most of them were joking) going "OMG, Russia has invaded us!" because they didn't know that when people mention Georgia they don't usually mean the US state of Georgia.)
