- Awesome Music: Some of the songs Hocking mentions in these books fall into this category, especially "Riverside" by Agnes Obel, which plays in Elegy while Harper and Daniel have a slow dance together.
- Creepy Awesome: The sirens in their true form are very deformed bird-women that basically look like something from the fantasy-horror genre. Mind you, this is a chick flick series.
- Fridge Logic: So Capri is a popular place for tourists; at least four people are found dead, all whom which were killed the same way, in the town. If that's the case, how come very few, if any, of the tourists show any concern for the fatalities, let alone evacuate the town?
- Nausea Fuel: In Wake, we have Alex and Harper finding the missing bodies of his best friend Luke and two other boys, which are described in yucky detail. Harper almost mistook the least fresh corpse for an old rotten stick had she not notice the shoe on it.
- Replacement Scrappy: Liv is considered this, especially for those who liked Lexi.
