Moral Event Horizon: When Michael gets back with Anne, that can be rationalized as him realizing how much he really needed her, and taking her to the jewelry store to get the ring seems like a step in the right direction. However, we realize Michael will never get better when he actually buys the fake ring, rather than the real one.
