YMMV / W. C. Fields

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: A lot of Fields's jokes revolved around drinking. It takes some of the humor out of the jokes to know that he really was a raging alcoholic in Real Life and died from complications of alcoholism.
  • Moment of Awesome: As Micawber, denouncing Uriah Heep and clearing the air in the 1935 David Copperfield film. A huge fan of Charles Dickens, Fields had literally begged George Cukor for the role, originally intended for Charles Laughton. Laughton didn't feel he was right for the part anyway and recommended Fields replace him. Many critics and fans describe Micawber as Fields's own Crowning Role of Awesome.
