YMMV / Tsuyoshi Kohsaka

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Was TK trying to win at all costs again Hunt, or he was putting a show knowing that he would retire shortly after? Considering that he chose to trade strikes with the mighty kickboxer and rarely looked to grapple as it was his specialty, he perhaps wanted his last match to be a memorable effort.
  • Broken Base: Exactly, what in the heaven is the TK guard? Some people believe that it is some type of butterfly guard, while other people think of it as a modified half guard, or even a spider guard; others believe it is an entire system of positions to avoid ground and pound, and finally, others believe that the TK guard and the much better known TK scissors are one and the same.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Hipster Kohsaka".note
  • Memetic Loser: For western fans, Kohsaka is known solely as the guy who "defeated" Fedor by a weird accident in some promotion and then went to take a beating from him in PRIDE, so they tend to assume he was just another Japanese tomato can. That Kohsaka went to the judges against Frank Shamrock, the Nogueira brothers, Randy Couture and Babalu, all in their primes and sometimes with Kohsaka carrying an injured knee, is usually ignored (or fully not known).
  • Never Live It Down:
    • Both his accidental victory against Fedor and his late beatdown to Fedor's hands. Kohsaka could be better remembered in MMA story as the second ace of RINGS, or the man who pioneered cross-training along with Frank Shamrock and Maurice Smith, but nah, he will be ever remembered by an accidental elbow and a bloody beating.
    • This time more in Kohsaka's favor, few fans from the time will forget the unjustified referee standups that saved Bas Rutten from a clear decision loss against Kohsaka at UFC 18. The fact that Rutten was being pushed by UFC through the roof was well known, and the controversy surrounding the referee's attitude to protect Rutten remains until today. Even the writers reviewing the event at Black Belt Magazine seemed a bit weirded out with the refereeing of the fight.
