* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: Creator/EddieRedmayne finally breaks away from playing "cute boys", and completely becomes UsefulNotes/StephenHawking, to the point where the genuine article sometimes had to remind himself that he wasn't watching a documentary. His UsefulNotes/GoldenGlobe, UsefulNotes/{{BAFTA}} Award, SAG Award, and UsefulNotes/AcademyAward all agree with that.

* HypeBacklash: The film earned a fair number of detractors who found the focus on Creator/StephenHawking's romantic life (versus his scientific achievements) to be a bit saccharine and [[OscarBait too heavy-handed in its attempts to showcase how inspirational a figure Hawking was]]. Those disliking the film were further exacerbated when Redmayne won an Oscar that they thought deserved to go to Creator/MichaelKeaton for ''Film/{{Birdman}}'', sparking a brief rivalry between fans of each film.

Making Tear Jerker page.

* TearJerker:
** The quiet scene at the end where Stephen [[spoiler: divorces Jane]], in a scene much softer than what happened in RealLife.
** Stephen breaking down in tears after [[spoiler: losing his ability to speak, following a tracheotomy.]]
** The bittersweet ending, where time reverses back to Stephen and Jane meeting for the first time, healthy and young.
** "Look what we made."
** A deleted scene where Jane, washing dishes after arguing on the phone for Stephen's pension, hears her baby boy cry. Stephen was holding him earlier and lost even more use of his fingers at that moment dropping him. You can see how devastated he looks that he can't even hold his own child.
*** The entire movie is pretty much this in the wake of Stephen Hawking's death.
