- Anti-Climax Boss: For all the fear and dread Elroy manages to inspire in Jack throughout the entire book, he goes down stupefyingly easy in a hail of machine gun bullets, courtesy of Jack and a train filled with weapons. Even Jack is stunned, equating the act to killing a childhood boogeyman.
- Ho Yay: Quite a bit implied between Jack and Wolf.
- Also between Jack and Richard, who exchange declarations of love more than once.
- Moral Event Horizon: For Heck Bast, it's when his twinner whips Ferd Janklow to death in the ore mine parallel to the Sunlight Home.
- Squick: As the other entries on this page show, a *lot* of characters try to have sex with Jack or are implied to want to. This includes several boys his own age as well as multiple adult men. At one point Jack mentally dismisses it as part of being an attractive boy, weirdly.
- Values Dissonance: Jack running into numerous Depraved Homosexual predators, and his blase attitude towards them as the book casually points out they're all over the place in California, really hasn't aged well. This also includes an offhand reference to women getting groped in public also supposedly being perfectly normal.
