YMMV / The Simpsons S5 E19 "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song"

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Bart mentions that it's unlikely anyone would be laughing at the things he did in twenty years. Twenty years later, the show was in its 25th season and still going strong.
    • And four years after that, as of "Left Behind", Ned Flanders has once again found himself employed at Springfield Elementary, not for a one-episode-stint as principal, but a position of fourth grade teacher... at least, before the job was given to Mrs. Peyton four years after that.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • When Bart asks his mom why she thinks it's a good idea to bring a potato to school for show and tell, her response is "I just think they're neat". The saying is used for people to describe why they like their favorite characters and things.
    • Skinner's hilariously awful book, and Apu's subsequent chewing-out, tends to be used for meme fodder a lot.
    • Chalmers slamming the idea of prayer in school is very popular among atheists & agnostics, especially whenever fringe politicians try to force theocracy into public schools.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Making a pass at your commanding officer being treated as a guaranteed way to get kicked out of the army is an obvious dig at the "don't ask, don't tell policy", which was issued only a couple of months after this episode first aired in 1994, but repealed in 2010.
  • Values Dissonance: During the brief time he was fired, Principal Skinner spends time with Bart, who is a student, to the point of taking him to an Italian restaurant for dinner. Nowadays with so many teachers both male and female being arrested and/or fired for having inappropriate relationships with underage students, teacher-student outings like this wouldn't be permitted without consent from the student's parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
