- Anticlimax Boss: After just about all the other sorcerers have subjected Kerish to gruelling tests or been outright hostile, Tebreega, the last sorceress, quite willingly gives up her key.
- Fridge Logic: The test that the Seven Wizards had to go through must have been quite difficult, if the stories told by Elmandis, Sendaaka and Saroc are to be believed. So how did a child like Ellandellore manage to pass it?
- Heartwarming Moments: As Kerish ascends the tower at the end of his journey, he has visions of the seven sorcerers, bringing home that he helped them by convincing them to give him their keys. Particular highlights are Ellandellore growing into puberty with Elmandis as his father-figure, Sendaaka and Saroc being reunited and Sendaaka being pregnant with their child, and the spirit of Shubeyash being at peace in death.
- Nightmare Fuel: Try anything in Shubeyash's country. Or Ellandellore's island. Or the desert labyrinth...
- Tear Jerker: One of Kerish's visions at the end of the story is of Forollkin and Kelinda fleeing to the ships with the other refugees as the Five Kingdoms conquer Galkis. Forollkin stops to look back, as if hoping that his brother might still show up.
