YMMV / The Relic

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The gag at the end of the book with a Relic cartoon getting cancelled may now feel more like a bitter reminder to Pendergast fans that a planned television adaptation of the book series, which would have made the character's debut in outside media due to his being cut from the film adaptation, ending up getting shelved while in development. Even moreso due to the fact that one of the story arcs for it was supposed to be a Truer to the Text adaptation of The Relic.
  • Nightmare Fuel: After the power cuts out in the museum in the latter half of the 1997 movie, the monster can very easily be hidden in plain sight by virtue of it being too dark to easily spot where exactly it is at any given time, with most people in the museum only getting a clue of its presence by the growling it makes, and in some cases not realizing the creature is right in front of them until it begins to consume parts of their brain in mere seconds afterwards.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The Stan Winston monster design and practical effects are incredible, and even the CGI still holds up fairly well today, though this is likely helped by the low lighting in many scenes. The monster's CGI tongue in one of the final scenes looks particularly impressive and well composited into the shot for an effect from 1997.
