- Adaptation Displacement: There are a number of people out there who don't even know the movie was based on a book.
- Even more so, when you consider that Gwynplaine himself — a wholly good character, was the inspiration for the Joker — a wholly evil character who looks almost exactly like him.
- Better Than Canon: The movie. Unlike the novel wherein, you know, the one where the protagonist and the love interest die.
- Tear Jerker: Where to start...? The whole damn story pretty much goes this way.
- Ugly Cute: Gwynplaine.
