YMMV / The Lost Vikings

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Lost Vikings 1 and 2 both have awesome, if somewhat limited, soundtracks. Norse By Norsewest has much more variety, but whether it's any better is very much a matter of preference.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Cavemen from the first game and gorillas in the second fight the same nasty way. They ball up and roll around making themselves invincible, combined with other enemies this can make them a handful. On their own they aren’t too bad, but can take a while to kill as they will only stay unrolled for a brief moment.
    • The Egyptian guards are the first enemies that can jump and love to easily bypass Olaf's shield as a result, making matter worse is that they usually are found in pairs. Their fast stabbing attack also makes it easy for them to combo a Viking into oblivion.
    • Another anti-shield enemy in Egypt are the scorpions that quickly lob little projectiles at various angles, both low enough to hit Olaf in his side and high enough to bop a Viking in the head, meaning you have to be ready shift Olaf’s shield in an instant. They also throw their attacks in threes, so if you are especially unlucky one scorpion can combo an unarmored Viking to death before they can heal themselves.
    • The rolling blades in the Factory World of the first game. They're the only enemy that can hurt Olaf through his shield.
    • Wizards constantly disappear, only rematerializing long enough for you to whack them, or, more likely, for them to nail you with a magic blast.
  • Even Better Sequel: Lost Vikings 2 is a superior game to the already well-done first game, for the simple reason that there are more characters to play as, causing more variety in the gameplay. Its way less cruel level design also helps it be overall more enjoyable.
  • Goddamned Bats: The flying robots from the Factory in the first game. They bombard the vikings with rocks; the good news is you can block their attacks with Olaf’s shield, but bad news is that these little jerks constantly bob up and down, so if you enter an area where they are on the same level as you there is a good chance they will go below Olaf’s shield and drop a rock inside a Viking. Some are also out of reach for Baleog to attack them, so sometimes you will just have to deal with them unless you can find an atomic.
  • Polished Port: The Sega Genesis version of The Lost Vikings added five new levels, an intro cutscene for each world, three-player simultaneous co-op, and an entirely new tune for the Factory level.note  The Definitive Edition included in the Blizzard Arcade Collection, true to its name, managed to combine the Genesis version's extra levels with the SNES version's graphics.
  • That One Level: The first game especially contains some ruthless levels.
    • Rivets in the Genesis version of Lost Vikings. A long level with a lot of tricky jumps and easy to mess up parts.
    • Phantom takes a several annoying parts of previous levels and combines them into one terror of a level including spinning platforms, precise block puzzles, obnoxious enemy placement, and hard to jump in bubbles.
    • Tuff really earns its name, it is one of the longest levels in the game with incredibly hard sections for all three of the vikings to go through. Erik especially has to get through some of the most diabolical platforming sections in either game.
