YMMV / The Fantastic Four (1978)

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Phantom of Film City's line "The Fantastic Four may go Hollywood, but they'll never come back alive" ultimately predicted Fox's unsuccessful adaptations from 2005 and '15, which put the comics out of production for several years.
  • Memetic Loser: The show's take on Magneto, one of the biggest and strongest Marvel Villains, becomes relegated into a massive joke who gets outsmarted because Reed Richards pulled a wooden gun on him. The sheer fact that he completely gives up and doesn't try to escape after Reed explained the ruse is just pouring salt into the wound.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Magneto's defeat via a wooden gun is pretty much prime meme material and the reason why people even remember this show exists.
    • Most of Magneto's lines, for that matter really.
Magneto: When I get angry, THINGS begin to happen!
    • Magneto's breakdown during the wooden gun reveal has also faced some mockery thanks to how overdramatic he was and also his advanced age. Which many have compared to an old man having a breakdown. Taking all of the above together, some even joke that this episode depicts Magneto succumbing to Alzheimer's, or chastize Mr. Fantastic for triggering a Holocaust survivor's PTSD.
  • Older Than They Think: The infamous moment where Mr. Fantastic defeats Magneto with a ruse involving a wooden gun actually originated in The Incredible Hulk #6, with the Hulk pulling a similar ruse on the villain Metal Master. The ruse was slightly less ridiculous in the original comic as Hulk and co. had the good sense to wait until after the villain had left to explain the trick.
  • Replacement Scrappy: H.E.R.B.I.E. could very well be the poster boy of this trope, as his purpose of taking over Johnny Storm's place in the Fantastic Four in this continuity has lead to some backlash and has given the bot a lot of detractors, to the point where making jabs at H.E.R.B.I.E is pretty common.
  • Signature Scene: Chances are the reason most people (even when the show stopped airing) know about this show is mostly that one scene where Magneto has a breakdown when a gun pointed at him by Reed Richards isn't able to be affected by his magnetism, which leads to him surrendering and Reed dropping the bombshell that the gun was made of wood. It is primarily the best-remembered part of the series as you can see elsewhere on the Video Examples page.
