YMMV / The Crazies (2010)

Go To

  • Breakout Character: Tritagonist Russell Clank may be the most iconic character. Almost all fanfiction about the film centers around him and some works even have him get Spared by the Adaptation.
  • Funny Moments: After the discovery of the body, Russell mentions that Travis King had mentioned something unusual.
Russell: You know, last week Travis King was goin' 'round sayin' he heard something crash out by Hopman Bog. I didn't think nothin' of it-
David: On account of him being full of shit?
    Russell: As a general rule.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: After the COVID-19 Pandemic, the extreme measures taken to enforce quarantine, and the extremes taken by the civilians to evade it, are a lot harsher.
  • He's Just Hiding: While the ending acts as if everyone besides Judy and David was massacred after being evacuated, is killed by Crazies, or gets nuked, some fans think that the military couldn't have fit that many people in the trucks where Judy finds dead evacuees and speculate that up to a few hundred people may have been evacuated for real and/or escaped to Cedar Rapids separately from David and Judy.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The captured young soldier who was thrust into things with no idea about what is going on and decides to defy Just Following Orders is a huge highlight of the movie despite only having about three minutes of screen time.
  • Remade and Improved: This film is a rare example of a remake that was not only more successful than the original, but also received better reviews from critics and audiences alike, who praised the cast, script, and direction, among other things.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Russell shooting the bodies of Peggy and Curt Hamill is a sign of infection but it's shown to be justified. The crazies have a habit of playing dead to lure victims into a false sense of security, so shooting their bodies to make sure they are dead is understandable.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: While many people think the film is Remade and Improved, others dislike how it cuts out the scenes showing bureaucracy making things worse and Reasonable Authority Figures trying to contain the outbreak without unnecessary violence.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: While plenty of fans view Becca as The Cutie, even they admit that she is a fairly disposable Tag Along Kid who barely affects the plot. This galls a lot of people, who think she could have been a better-developed Action Survivor, especially given how her actress, Danielle Panabaker, had just earned acclaim for such a role in Friday the 13th (2009).
