  • Awesome Music: Any of their remixes.
    • "Don't Let Me Down" with Daya.
    • Just about the entirety of "Memories...Do Not Open"
      • "Paris"
      • "Something Just Like This" with Coldplay.
      • "Young"
      • "The One"
      • "Honest"
    • Almost all of World War Joy but particular tracks include:
  • Broken Base: Things got heated between fans after the release of Memories...Do Not Open. Some fans declared it a step up for spinning the Genre Roulette and moving away from a cliche sound. Others find it a confused mess that can't focus on one style and prefer their earlier two EP's, Bouquet and Collage.
  • Critical Dissonance: Memories...Do Not Open was slammed by critics, only having an aggregate score of 43 on Metacritic. Didn't stop it from topping the Billboard 200, though. Not even Anthony Fantano wrecked this notion, and his reviews are hailed online as the gospel.
  • First Installment Wins: Critics were much kinder to their first two extended plays, Bouquet and Collage, than they were to their debut album Memories...Do Not Open.
  • Memetic Mutation: "...but first, lemmie take a selfie." The song was even accused of being purposefully designed to have viral appeal.
  • Narm: As Todd in the Shadows points out, the main verse of "Closer" gave way too many information to the point of crossing to this trope. This is especially exacerbated by the fact that those came right before the climax of the song and was sung by both singers.
    • This is some fans' reaction to "Waterbed".
  • Never Live It Down: They'll never be able to live down "#SELFIE" being their Breakthrough Hit. While they haven't expressed a complete dislike for the song, and still play it live, they have made it clear they're trying to distance themselves from that image. Although they may have finally lived it down in 2016.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The video for "You Owe Me" starts with Andrew and Alex doing various mundane things while getting ready for a dinner party. However once the dinner party starts they're revealed to be vampires who proceed to devour their dinner guests. By the end of the video a bloodied Alex is disposing their bodies in a garbage bin while a bloodied Andrew is busy cleaning up the blood.
      • Andrew's face before they start the slaughter is utterly disturbing compared to his normal look due to his black eyes and his fangs. Also at some parts during the massacre, Alex looks like he's smiling.
      • The ending of the video for "Everybody Hates Me" shows Andrew back in the car driven by Alex only to stare at the camera with the same black eyes.
    • By God, the music video for "Save Yourself". Andrew stars as a vampire that creepily sings the song to a security camera. At the end, Hollywood is shown to be in chaos due to his actions.
  • Refrain from Assuming: "Roses" is not called "Say You'll Never Let Me Go" or "Take it Slow".
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Went from being one-hit wonders best known for a novelty dance song to having arguably the biggest smash hit since "Uptown Funk" in the span of two years.
    • After the negative reviews of Memories...Do Not Open and mixed reviews of Sick Boy their third album World War Joy was a huge improvement.
  • Sequel Displacement: "Roses" tends to be overshadowed by "Don't Let Me Down" and "Closer" in the eyes of the public.
  • Signature Song: "#SELFIE" in 2014, "Roses" in 2015, "Closer" (with "Don't Let Me Down" in second place) in 2016 onwards.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: "Paris" often draws comparisons to "Midnight City" by M83.
  • The Woobie: The protagonist's of "Sick Boy", "You Owe Me" and "Everybody Hates Me".
  • Win Back the Crowd: As mentioned in Rescued from the Scrappy Heap.
