• Escapist Character: As with many of her heroines, Montgomery seems to have written Valancy as Wish-Fulfillment modeled after her own childhood under strict grandparents, but she manages to pull it off without making Valancy unsympathetic.
• Moment of Awesome: Combined in much of Valancy's initial rebellion and her family's reaction to it, topped off by a big reunion dinner at which Valancy finally and precisely deflates each member's stupid pomposity (and even more stupid puns) via a series of impeccably witty one-liners, for once leaving her beautiful Cousin Olive in her dust and everyone else completely stunned.
• The Woobie: Valancy is so completely lonely and sad before she is incorrectly diagnosed that you just want to give her an enormous hug:
  The only thing Valancy liked about her room was that she could be alone there at night to cry if she wanted to.
