These are what we call the 'YMMV items.' Things that some people find in this work. We call them 'your mileage might vary' because not everyone sees these things in the same way. This starts discussions in the trope lists, a thing we don't want. Please use the discussion page if you'd like to discuss any of these items.
YMMV: Taiji Sawada
Broken Base: One major reason for one of the Broken Base s in X Japan fandom (whether he or Heath is a better bassist). Another one quickly developed after his death between fans who insist on the official version of his death (suicide in custody) and between other artists, people close to him, and fans that believe anything from negligence to outright homicide occurred and that there was a coverup of his actual cause of death.
All of the songs he wrote or played major bass parts in for Loudness. "Black Widow," "Racing The Wind," "Slaughter House," "Twisted," "Firestorm," and "Everyone Lies" are some of the most Epic Rocking metal songs ever to be played - and while others can try to cover them, his sound on all of them was so unique that few if any bassists aside from his personal protege Shu can even begin to approach it, regardless of talent or gear setup.
As another example, compare any song Taiji did with X to Heath doing the same song later for X Japan. The differences, while not as severe as those engaged in the "who's the better bassist" Flame War might suggest, are definitely present. A good example of this is actually Yokohama 2010 "X," with Taiji as the guest bassist. You can definitely tell when he starts to play on the song, even though Heath is already playing.
Epileptic Trees: The theories as to Yoshiki's and Taiji's differences (everything from actual musical differences, to money, to a physical fight to a breakup of a relationship to more.) The theories as to how Taiji fell so far and so fast. Now, the theories as to how and why he died.
Fan Dumb: Attracts somewhat less than the rest of his former bandmates. Mostly his was in the form of "Taiji go back to X!" (never mind he had valid reasons for not wanting to, despite having reconciled with Yoshiki, and that he eventually DID go back to perform with X Japan), though there was a short-lived flare of Internet Counterattack with the breakup of D.T.R.
Harsher in Hindsight: For the people who believe he was killed, his part in the "Week End" PV for X and his lyrics for "Black Widow" for Loudness. Namely, in the "Week End" PV his character was fatally shot/stabbed in the chest, and the lyrics of "Black Widow" are about a Black Widow. It would later come out about his death that his only documented external physical injury was combat wounds and a red slash mark on his chest, and that Kitami Terumi had been stealing from him, tried to scam his friends while he was dying, and likely played some role in his death.
Along with Yoshiki, seems to have attracted the most gay and bisexual male fans/groupies of the X Japan members, regardless of what his own sexuality may have been. It seems if someone's a gay or bi male fan/groupie, he will either be a Yoshiki fanboy or a Taiji fanboy, though that may have had an explanation...
Memetic Sex God: He attained this among much of X Japan fandom fairly early on, and it was only established more with his parts in the "Week End" and "Celebration" performance videos for X Japan and a few of his photoshoots for X Japan and for Loudness. Among both female and male fans, and even after his death some of the postings of his pics etc are still remarking on his sexiness.
One example being the infamous "Sawada cluster" on Tumblr. They are called that because none of their actual usernames are SFW enough for this wiki.
His descent into homelessness and addiction and worse.
Suffering from dying bone in a leg and hip. Osteonecrosis is a horrifying disease.
His apparent drug addiction, which led him to allegedly attack his manager and allegedly try to kick a window out of a plane in flight. Though some have raised objections to this saying all he did was kick a seat. Which, if it was true that his behavior didn't actively endanger the flight's safety by trying to kick out the window, makes the charges against him a fine example of Disproportionate Retribution, which is in itself Nightmare Fuel and Paranoia Fuel - that someone could be so severely punished (imprisoned without immediate bail on felony charges) for behavior that, at worst, on the ground might have resulted in a ticket ("disturbing the peace," if no one was truly injured) or at the very worst an arrest but with low and immediate bail (simple assault and/or misdemeanor battery, if someone was hurt but with non-serious injuries).
His DEATH. Seriously, he went from fine to dead in the course of two days.
This Is Your Interview On Drugs: There's a video of (one of) X's first TV appearances that once was on Youtube that featured Taiji acting incredibly loopy (as in, giggling fits and trying to fight with the station's mascot) and just getting better/worse from there. Unfortunately, the video was deleted due to copyright from the news station that aired it, and now seems to be Lost Forever.
