See Star Wars Legends for old EU.

  • Broken Base:
    • After the Disney buyout, the entire EU was rendered non-canon (except the original six theatrical films and The Clone Wars) because the writers of the Sequel Trilogy wanted to have a flesh slate to work on. This caused major division between fans who objected to over three decades' worth of work being casually tossed out to create a consistent setting, and those who refused to acknowledge the EU before and are glad it's non-canon. The controversy was mitigated somewhat when certain aspects of the Legends continuity were re-incorporated into the Canon, such as Thrawn appearing in Rebels.
    • Some fans declared that they're Taking a Third Option: if it's not been changed in the Disney EU, they're still believing it's canon (for example, the Old Republic era involving Revan, until it's retconned, remains canon in the eyes of some fans). Later on, it was announced at the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015 canon panel that the Old Republic era, including Knights Of The Old Republic and The Old Republic are not canon, but there is potential to revisit the era in canon.
    • The focus on the Original Trilogy era has some fans either interested in learning more about the reign of the Empire or craving for the Prequel Trilogy era.
    • An issue that the new EU now shares with Legends beginning with the High Republic era: should the main conflict of The 'Verse stick with lightsiders versus darksiders (Jedi/Sith, Rebellion/Empire, Resistance/First Order), or are major conflicts with somebody else entirely (Eternal Empire, Yuuzhan Vong, Killiks, Nihil) a worthwhile creative choice?
    • There's the division in the fanbase between the "Small Galaxiers" (a derogatory term used to describe them) who want more interconnectivity in the stories and characters, and those who want the stories to be able stand for themselves without the need for watching TV shows or reading tie-in material to understand what's happening (most notably by avoiding using established characters and mentioning events), with the former camp being highly supportive of producer Dave Filoni's tendency to interconnect his storylines and characters, while the latter being very supportive of the Sequel Trilogy (except The Rise of Skywalker) and the High Republic sub-franchise.
    • The Lucasfilm Story Group and other writers have stated as early as Star Wars Adventures and LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures that some stories would be lighter on continuity. While The Mandalorian Season 2 and Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 would take this a step further by making retcons to earlier storiesnote , and another when Star Wars: The Bad Batch heavily retconned Kanan's encounter with Order 66, a once beloved scene from Star Wars: Kanan for how it was originally portrayed in the comic (which was in fact written by Rebels Season 1 executive producer and writer Greg Weisman). Many fans feel that these retcons do away with the promise at the beginning of the Disney buyout that canon would adhere to each other and value each other equally, seeing as Legends suffered from enough retcons that it had to sort its entries by ranking importance.note  Meanwhile, Lucasfilm Story Group has stated in light of Kanan's retconned backstory that canon is more like a "mythology", fluid and open to interpretation, while also emphasizing that the franchise is meant to be less about obsessing over continuity and more about enjoying it for what it is, which some fans also accept. However, others took his statements to mean that visual media (TV Shows, Live-Action series and videogames) will take lesser media (Comicbooks, literature, etc) as more of a vague outline rather than fully canon, which many feel is the return of the Canon Ranking system used in the discontinued Legends timeline (Visual media trumps all other media).
  • Complete Monster: See here.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Thrawn's hyper-fixation with art, hyper-attention to detail, occasional awkwardness, and misreading of social cues (especially with the ever-shifting field of politics) could have been written off as the Chiss being a Planet of Hats. Only Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising subverts this and shows that Thrawn is just as much an outlier among his own people as he is among humans. General fanon consensus is he's autistic or somewhere on that spectrum.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: See here in the "Disney Continuity" entries.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • As of April 10th, 2017 (a few days before Celebration 2017), some fans noticed that the official Star Wars Twitter page had started following Rosario Dawson and Dwayne Johnson, with a popular rumor having gone around for a while that Dawson would play Ahsoka in a live-action role. Dawson and Dave Filoni started following each other on Twitter at the same time, too, and considering Filoni mostly just follows ice hockey teams and co-workers, it's rather suspect. Dawson indeed was cast as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian; Johnson is still a question mark.
    • There are rumors going around of another animated series directed by Filoni either succeeding after or being released alongside Rebels. While anything from the Old Republic era as popularly demanded (specifically a canon adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic) are currently off limits so that Bioware still has time to end its Legends story in The Old Republic, the other guess is that it will fill in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
    • Voice actor Stephen Stanton revealed in a podcast interview that his voice for AP-5 was being reused for another Lucasfilm animated series... huh?
  • Fan Nickname: The Filoni-Verse is the name many fans use to refer to the shows producer and writer Dave Filoni has directly worked on such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian since the four shows continue the storylines he created or co-created with a nice sideplate of returning characters, Continuity Nods and Mythology Gags.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The roleplaying sourcebook Gadgets and Gears (released in September 2019) revealed that a few factions in the Galactic Civil War made grenades that carry the Blue Shadow Virus, a historically infamous virus that killed millions and Dr. Nuvo Vindi later tried to start a galactic pandemic with a deadlier version of it. A few months after publication, the COVID-19 virus became widespread enough to be declared a global pandemic, and disturbingly, there were reports of white supremacists planning to weaponize the virus against racial minorities in the United States.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The romanji for Thrawn according to Google Translate is Sloan. Guess who else is a Grand Admiral in the new canon?
    • Some fans greeted the new Expanded Universe because they weren't happy about how canonicity worked with the old Expanded Universe, given that it took things a while to standardize. Now, the Disney Expanded Universe is even lighter on keeping a standard canon than the old one!
  • I Knew It!: Almost immediately after Lucasfilm announced that the old Expanded Universe had been Exiled from Continuity and rebranded as Star Wars Legends, fans of Ensemble Dark Horse Grand Admiral Thrawn started insisting that Thrawn would show up in the new Expanded Universe eventually. They were absolutely adamant that he was still around, even though Timothy Zahn's The Thrawn Trilogy—where he was introduced, and later Killed Off for Real—had officially never happened. But in 2016, it turned out that they were right after all: it was announced that Thrawn would appear in Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, and that Zahn would be penning the new novel Star Wars: Thrawn, which would officially reintroduce everyone's favorite Chiss in White with a new Canon backstory.
  • Memetic Mutation: As before, Thrawn's full name, Mitth'raw'nuruodo is either joked about how it has the word "raw" in it or the last part sounds like "Naruto".
  • Misblamed: Given J. J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek, don't be surprised if you see fans accusing J.J. of wiping out the Star Wars EU canon. Also, don't be surprised if you see people blaming George Lucas or Disney's decision. The policy does largely follow what was George's own position towards the former EU back when he was in charge, but that was always his position and never pretended otherwise. As for Disney, they did not make the choice to wipe the EU and they're smart enough to let Lucasfilm handle the reins, so Executive Meddling by Disney very rarely happens to the new Star Wars stories. The EU wipe was decided by Lucasfilm.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Captain Phasma became The Scrappy in The Force Awakens for being hyped up by advertising to be the new Boba Fett, only for her to be an Advertised Extra and her most notable action in the film being a Dirty Coward that screws over Starkiller Base and gets thrown in the trash compartment as a result. And then Phasma shows she's a deliberately unlikable sociopath that's out for herself, willing to kill her parents, her brother, her clan, and the man who recruited her into the First Order in the first place to secure her own place among greatness, with that greatness being the First Order until further notice.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A Broad Strokes faithful adaptation of the X-Wing Series as of Aftermath: Empire's End is near impossible, as Wedge never makes any nods to events from his early piloting career that you'd think would be mentioned as relevant to Phantom Squadron if it did happen. In addition, at the end of Empire's End, Wedge decides to become a piloting teacher rather than continue being a pilot, meaning Phantom Squadron can't channel Wraith Squadron.
