- Narm: The film wants to be a mix of a Space Opera and a more humane First Contact yarn, but instead it's a campy Melodrama with cheap special effects, oddball alien costumes, weird little details like the aliens communicating by telepathy, and a general cheesy atmosphere of that reeks of The '70s. It very nearly got chosen for Mystery Science Theater 3000 and finally got featured on Rifftrax years later. But as mentioned below, the suicide subplot is dark, and brings some major Mood Whiplash into the film.
- Nightmare Fuel: The suicide epidemics, when we see several bodies lying on the ground with puddles of blood streaming from their heads. Later on, the scene where Betty kills herself is VERY disturbing. Whatever Narm Charm the movie had until that point is thoroughly washed away. Fortunately, she is brought back to life at the end.
- Unintentional Period Piece: Made at that point in The '70s when UFO conspiracy theories, Ancient Astronaut speculation, Space Operas, and funky "space jazz-rock" were all massively popular.
