YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S1 E8 "The Battle"

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: As was pointed out on the main page, Kazago already knew Bok had no intention of earning profit on this particular venture. So why did he really arrest Bok at the end? Perhaps he was genuinely repulsed by the fact his commanding officer was trying to commit murder and his "Because there's no profit" explanation was simply to save face. Alternatively, it might be that Bok had talked him into going along with handing over the Stargazer for nothing on the grounds that more profit could be made further down the line that way, and that Kazago realized that tricking the Federation into killing one of their most decorated starship captains probably wouldn't do much for future business relations between the two powers. Or possibly a bit of both. There's also the fact it involves a thought maker, which even the Ferengi believe are illegal.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When Riker tells Picard that Bok was put under guard because there was no profit in it, Picard replies that "in revenge, there never is." Jonathan Frakes would later play David Xanatos, who agrees that there is no profit in revenge.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Whereas most of the reprimands that Wesley receives in the first two seasons are at best for things that aren't his fault, or at worst designed to make him look good at the expense of everyone else, he does get a rare legitimate yelling-at when he identifies the Stargazer on long-range sensors, then runs up to tell everyone on the bridge of his discovery, instead of using ship communications. Picard immediately reprimands him for his transparent glory-seeking and trying to engineer an excuse to be around when the Ferengi beam on-board. He is allowed to remain on the bridge anyway.
