YMMV / Species II

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The film has a male astronaut being infected by a black liquid, then impregnating a woman with a rapidly-growing alien lifeform. A near-identical scenario would play out 14 years later in Prometheus.
  • Narm: Patrick's children somehow all happen to wear identical grey shirts, regardless of their origins.
  • Nausea Fuel: The gore is elevated to downright disgusting levels, most notably the repeated Chest Bursters.
  • Sequelitis: The first film is generally regarded as the most popular due to the various reasons mentioned on the main page. The second tries to make a bigger spectacle, which worked for some and not for others. It also throws (almost) all the ambiguity that helped make the first so interesting out the window — the hybrids and their makers are evil and want to wipe out humanity (and Martians, apparently). It retains some by asking "what if Sil had been raised in a supportive, enriching environment instead of in isolation as a lab rat", but still has her turn against humans for much of the film.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • Take a real close look at the monster effects at the end. The constant strobes are there to make you miss how terrible and awkward they look.
    • Patrick's second alien form ("combat form") is the crowning failure. It looks like someone put spare xenomorph armour pieces onto strings and called it a day and it barely moves with its actions.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Despite the film's flaws, there's no denying there are some pretty awesome scenes regarding practical effects, and even a good CGI shot in Patrick's head growing back after he eats his own shotgun.
