YMMV / Sealab 2021

• Adaptation Displacement: If it weren't for this show, no one would even know there was a Sealab 2020.
• Awesome Music:
  • There is the intro. With its catchy hooks and raw guitar, it's going to get stuck in your head whether you want it to or not.
  • Taking advantage of the series being a Gag Dub, there is this surprisingly tender take on Águas de Março.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Quite a few, but especially the "Uh-oh" sequence.
• Bizarro Episode: Strangely has nothing to do with the episode titled "Bizarro". "7211" may count for being the only non-comedic episode in the series. It was a 2020 script redubbed by the 2021 actors, just to show how boring the old show was.
• Crosses the Line Twice: They're good at this.
  Sparks: Go roll over for the Nazis!
  Yost: For your information, the Dutch Resistance was a crucial factor in the Allied victory in World War II.
  Sparks: Oh yeah? Why don't you go tell that to Anne Frank?
• Ensemble Dark Horse: The Bizarros. They only appeared in a single episode, but it was arguably the most memorable episode of the series. Bizarro Quinn seems to be an Ensemble Darkhorse among the Bizarros.
• Fandom Rivalry: Around Season 3, the show began to take increasing potshots at anime fans, which did very little to endear itself to the anime fans who were watching Adult Swim to give their comedy lineup a chance. Ironically, in the year 2021, [adult swim] still airs anime via the Toonami block, while 70/30 Productions, the creators of Sealab 2021 went out of business back in 2009.
• Fridge Horror: The Other Wiki lists the known ranks of the main characters. Guess who had the highest after Murphy/Shanks (and presumably has control of Sealab when they're between captains)? Sparks. (He's a commander, the others are either lieutenant commander or lieutenant.) Granted, he's one of the non-stupid characters. He's also insane and evil.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Murphy established the Knights of Mars before they were cool.
  • The "Black Stormy" question from "Chickmate" becomes this when we find out the crew of Spacelab are opposite race versions of the Sealab crew. So yes, there is a Black Stormy.
• Memetic Mutation:
  • "Bizarro!"
    • "I'm helping! I'm helping!"
  • RESPEK KNUCKLES
  • D-cups full of justice! (Sweet!)
• More Popular Spin Off: Sealab 2020 was pretty obscure, and still is, but 2021 is much more liked.
• One-Scene Wonder: Ted, from Accounting. He only appeared in one scene in the pilot, but his banter with Captain Murphy (and his attempts to tell Murphy he doesn't know how to launch the radio beacon) became a classic example of the show's banter at its best.
• Replacement Scrappy: Many fans view Tornado Shanks as this, especially considering he never really had a consistent personality.
• The Scrappy: Sharko. Even if it was an Intended Audience Reaction, the fact remained he wasn't funny, the character insisted on repeating the one joke about himself over and over again (that his father put his human penis in his mother's shark-gina) which didn't make it any funnier, and the episodes focused on him were among the worst of the series.
• Seasonal Rot: The post-Murphy episodes are viewed as having this problem with less funny jokes, the aforementioned Replacement Scrappy Tornado Shanks, Sharko, and an increasing amount of Take That, Audience! gags to compensate, particularly against anime fans.
• Spiritual Successor:
  • Frisky Dingo and Archer.
  • Some see SpaceStation13 as a video game version of 'Sealab 2021 IN SPACE!
• Take That, Scrappy!: In the Series Finale "A Legacy of Laughter", the show goes on to commemorate the series' most-beloved character. In comes Sharko... before Captain Shanks knocks him off the stage with a giant Captian's Log. A tribute to the real most-beloved character then plays: Captain Murphy.
• Ugly Cute: Bizarro Quinn, and Murphy's scorpion Ben.
• The Woobie: Even though his suffering is almost always Played for Laughs, it's really hard not to feel bad for Quinn.
