- Harsher in Hindsight: The idea of Asuka and Shinji becoming such a broken mess that she starts to abuse him with his permission in a far worse manner than anything seen in canon is bad enough, but then 3.33 was released and it featured an even bleaker scenario: Now, everyone has become so broken that such an scenario could be made true. Interestingly enough, the author also started working on a post-''3.33' fic (though it's currently a dead fic).
- Jerkass Woobie: Consider everything that happened in the series to Asuka since her mother's insanity and suicide to her Love Interest trying to kill her again. After Third Impact she is so frightened and miserable that she starts to torture Shinji physically and emotionally... and still she hates herself for it, feeling sickened with herself after every beating but being unable to stop. Finally she manages to snap out of that vicious cycle, but by then everyone but Shinji hates her. On top of that, her father declares that she is not his "trouble" anymore for reasons completely unrelated to her personality, behaviour and actions, and she and Shinji are being targeted by hired assassins.
- Why Would Anyone Take Her Back?: As much as Asuka is presented as The Atoner, several reviewers have questioned her Karma Houdini status and the fact that she is still allowed to be near Shinji despite everything she has done to him. Where Toji, Kensuke, Hikari, Rei, and Gendo are meant to be unsympathetic when they confront Shinji over his relationship with Asuka suddenly becomes a case of Strawman Has a Point, since she had essentially tortured him for months and nearly killed him and he still cares about her. Mental trauma aside, Asuka would have been forcibly separated from Shinji for his own safety. Misato even notes that it’s well within her power to evict Asuka and file a restraining order, and the only reason she’s not doing either is that Shinji asked her not to.
