Ensemble Darkhorse: Samantha used to be a supporting character, but she turned out more interesting than Matt.
Mary Sue: Ming used to come dangerously close to this with her various talents.
Samantha is fully in Mary Sue country (Omni Disciplinary Scientist, high-level athlete, professional-class drummer), but, like Ming, is likeable enough that her talents don't add up to unlikeablity.
