  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In the original film, there's a small bipedal reptilian creature that resembles a pocket-sized Gillman with a long tail in the lab building, realized through pretty good stop-motion animation. Neither of the heroes notice it, Dr. Hoak never mentions it, and it disappears completely from the film when it runs off-screen after Hoak first appears.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: To distract a guard, Maggie shouts "Look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!" and then flashes her breasts. The Christopher Reeve movie came out four months later.
  • Tearjerker:
    • When Paul and Maggie arrive at the summer camp after the piranha attack, a badly-bitten Dumont is shown laying next to the blanket-covered dead body of a child who did not survive, clearly despondent.
      • Betsy's death during the said piranha attack can also be sad to some.
    • Near the end of the film, Paul enters a catatonic state after polluting the water to kill the piranhas, as his daughter Suzie watches with tears as Maggie tries to give him water.
  • Narm: The piranhas sound like gobbling turkeys whenever we see them munching on someone.
  • Sequelitis: Piranha Part Two: The Spawning. The film's production was a nightmare for James Cameron due to Executive Meddling to the extreme, it got negative reviews and bombed hard at the box office. Because of this, Cameron disowned the film for many years, instead claiming that The Terminator was his first feature length movie. He has since come around in recent years, stating it to be "the finest flying-piranha movie ever made".
