YMMV / Pedro Páramo

Go To

  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: One of many, MANY ways to interpret the novel.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The priest refuses absolution to Miguel at his funeral, after Miguel killed his brother and raped his neice.
  • Tear Jerker: The death of Susana San Juan, and Pedro Páramo pleading her not to leave.
"We old folks don't sleep much, almost never. We may drowse, but our mind keeps working. That's the only thing I have left to do." Then he added, aloud: "It won't be long now. It won't be long. You've been gone a long time, Susana. The light is the same now as it was then; not as red, but that same pale light veiled in the white gauze of the mist. (...) "That was the last time I saw you. As you went by, you brushed the branches of the Paradise tree beside the path, sweeping away its last leaves with your passing. Then you disappeared. I called after you, 'Come back, Susana!'"
  • Nightmare Fuel: the book is too passive to be truly scary, but some things are definitively terrifying if you think about them for too long. Juan listening the screams of a murdered man in Edúviges's inn, the whole living vs dead confusion and especially Juan dying absolutely out of nowhere.
