* AwesomeMusic: "Fireflies", "Alligator Sky", "Deer in the Headlights", "To the Sky", and, if you're not part of the people giving flak about his post-''Shooting Star'' material, "Good Time".
** From ''The Midsummer Station'', ''Metropolis'' and ''Embers'' are also pretty awesome.
** "When Can I See You Again?" from ''WreckItRalph'' definitely deserves mention.
** He also has a habit of teasing the crowd when he plays "Fireflies" by playing the chord progression as a punk-pop song for a few bars before launching into the main hook.
* BaseBreaker: The Shooting Star EP. One half of the base feels TheyChangedItNowItSucks and criticizes Adam for adopting a more 'generic' style, while the other half defends Adam by pointing out that he's just experimenting and developing his style.
** His decision to not provide his music for ''Series/{{Glee}}'' was seen by some as a sign that he's homophobic (as he's a devout Christian). Of course, many other musicians have rejected their music being used on Glee for various reasons besides the show's focus on gay characters and Adam has never stated that his faith or attitudes toward any group had ''anything'' to do with refusing Glee permission to use his songs. The fact he likes both Doctor Who and Homestuck also leans towards debunking that theory.
*** Of course, you have some fans who are happy Glee won't get their hands on his music due to a disliking of the show.
** His upcoming fifth album, "Mobile Orchestra" has managed to become this even before its release. the main reasons are it being the shortest album yet (A mere ten songs, two of which are recycled from the Ultraviolet EP), having a disproportionate number of collaborations (5 tracks feature guest artists... that's half the album), and the fact that the lead single used to promote it is seen as complete radio-bait (a song about graduation released in mid-late May? Really?) with none of Adam's usual charm or creativity. Time will tell what reception to the album as a whole is.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: In the music video for "To the Sky", which was made for the ''WesternAnimation/LegendOfTheGuardiansTheOwlsOfGaHoole'' film, Adam randomly turns into an owl at the end. Thematically appropriate, random as all hell.
* EarWorm: I'D LIKE TO MAKE MYSELF BELIEVEEEEEEE~
** I'll be out of my mind, and you'll be out of ideas pretty soon...
*** If the green left the grass on the other side, I would make like a tree and leavvveee...
**** "[[Disney/WreckItRalph It's been fun but now I've got to go, life is way too short to take it slow...]]"
** ''Good Time'', his collab with Music/CarlyRaeJepsen was intentionally made as such. ''We don't even have to try~! It's always a good time~!''
** "Fo-o-ollow the li-i-ight through the dreams and disasters...!"
** "Kamikaze" can easily get stuck in the head.
* EpicRiff: The famous synth intro of "Fireflies."
* FanCommunityNicknames: Hoot Owls (with Owl Citizen being a less commonly used nickname).
* FridgeBrilliance: A couple of lyrics have meanings that you need to think a bit about, but there are some pretty clever meanings: ''Fireflies'' has 'I'd like to make myself believe that Planet Earth turns ''slowly'''. The point is that it ''doesn't''; life goes by too fast most of the time.
** One lyric in ''Silhouette'' is 'the more I try to move on, the more I feel alone'. Doesn't this seem to remarkably sum up Adam [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks losing fans over the development in his style]] in the ''Shooting Star EP'' and ''The Midsummer Station''? [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation Of course]], it may very well also/in fact be a reference to Ann Marie.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Referenced by Adam himself on his blog when explaining the style change in the ''Shooting Star EP'' on his blog. Of course, ironically, said style change got [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks the opposite reaction]]:
--> '''Adam''': It's a bummer for an artist of any kind to hear, 'Yeah it's great but it's a lot like your previous work.'
* NarmCharm: Let's face it, [[TastesLikeDiabetes diabetes never tasted so good]].
* NightmareFuel: See LyricalDissonance on the main page.
* SignatureSong: Easily "Fireflies."
* SnarkBait: His [[TastesLikeDiabetes incredibly lighthearted]] lyrics are a subject of jokes among music enthusiasts.
* TastesLikeDiabetes: According to some critics.
** Strawberry Avalanche is about... well, an avalanche of strawberries. It has ''candy-coated clouds''.
* TearJerker: [[Tearjerker/OwlCity See here]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Many people complaining that the new style of the ''Shooting Star EP'' and ''The Midsummer Station'' is too 'generic' and that it's just not Adam's style. Never mind the fact that Adam is known for experimenting with new styles...
** When Adam Young meshed together both his new style and his older style on 2014's ''Ultraviolet EP'', many fans were very pleased.
* [[TheyCopiedItSoItSucks He Copied It, So It Sucks]]: A lot of the complaints his Hatedom gives against him is that his songs sound very similar to another electronic music act, The Postal Service. Some have argued that the direction he's taken since the ''Shooting Star EP''/''The Midsummer Station'' is in direct response to this.
* TrueArtIsAngsty: The main thing that his critics say.
* TrueArtIsIncomprehensible: Quite honestly, any song that isn't about [[SillyLoveSongs love]] or [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic spirituality]] is this.
* TheWoobie: From the opening lyrics of "Honey and the Bee", the bee Adam's using as perspective. Lonely, watching other insects splatter on car windscreens. He even says it 'but boy I need a hug'. And this troper would give the poor guy one...
** Arguably this is what makes "Honey and the Bee" so touching. The fact that Adam sets up a poor lonely Woobie type, and then gives him a loving companion.
* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: Although according to Wikipedia, he might have been affected by sleep deprivation for his initial recordings.
** WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic: Quite a few of them, though "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMuOcyZjB2A Meteor Shower]]" is a prominent example.
