- Adaptation Displacement: The film is considerably more well-known than the book.
- Ensemble Dark Horse:
- Whit Sterling has a reasonable fanbase for being a charismatic, affable, and smart mob boss towards Jeff and his close ones. Being portrayed by Kirk Douglas doesn't hurt either.
- Jeff's second lover, Ann Miller can also be seen as one for being basically a benevolent counterpart to Kathie and genuinely loving and caring for Jeff and coming to his aid.
- Jimmy the mute/deaf boy is beloved for being one of the sole characters to not have any dark, shady side to their personality. and also for leading hitman Joe to a mountainous stream in the woods and coming to Jeff's rescue as he's about to be shot, by killing Joe.
- Evil Is Cool: Again, Whit Sterling is an easy contender for this film for reasons listed under the darkhorse section.
- Retroactive Recognition: Kirk Douglas was not yet a major star when he was given an important, but relatively brief role in this film. He wouldn't become a major leading man in his own right till Champion two years later.
