YMMV / Northernlion

Go To

  • Archive Panic: His rate of video uploads is frankly absurd compared to many other Let's Play channels. Since the start of the channel in 2010 he's been consistently uploading somewhere around 3 to 5 videos a day, each 30-60 minutes long. The biggest individual example is of The Binding of Isaac, across the original flash game, Rebirth, it's three expansions, and the Antibirth mod, he uploaded Isaac daily (often time multiple episodes a day) from 2011 to 2022. About a year after the release of Repentance daily episodes stoped, although occasional Isaac uploads do still happen. In total this adds up over 4000 episodes each of which range from 30 minutes to over an hour. Once you make it through ALL the Isaac episodes, you'll be about 1/3rd of the way through his youtube backlog, so have fun with that archive.
  • Fan Nickname: Many, many fans have called him a variation of "Egg", due to his baldness.
  • Genius Bonus: The Northernlion Story episode 44 shows NL holding a calendar with the date 1969 crossed out and replaced with 2014 handwritten in. Besides being another recurrence of the number 69 in this series, comparing years 1969 and 2014 reveals that they have the exact same layout and have interchangeable calendars.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: One of Northernlion's main complaints about Virtual Bart is that the game's attempt at humor uses a lot of Black Comedy and mean-spirited jokes, such as a Game Over cutscene of Bart being drawn and quartered, compared to the show's family-friendly comedy. Among the major criticisms of later seasons of The Simpsons is that the humor has gotten too dark and mean-spirited.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the Virtual Bart Let's Play, he decides to try beating the dinosaur stage by running past all obstacles, and proceeds to discuss a hypothetical idea for a game where it's beneficial to run past all your enemies even though they're trying to kill you... which is a fairly accurate description of Iji.
    • In one of the Binding of Isaac episodes, he kills an enemy hoping it'll drop something useful, and when it turns out to be useless to him, he says "You might as well give me a lump of coal!" Guess what item was later added to the game?
    • In another episode, when encountering a boss, he encounters a glitch where on the vs. screen, the boss's portrait cycles through all the different bosses. Northernlion comments that he thought he would be fighting all the bosses, which is something he expected Edmund to do. In Rebirth, there is a Boss Rush room that has all the bosses from the first game and the expansion sans the final bosses (as well as a few of the Womb/Utero bosses).
      • As if that wasn't enough, Afterbirth+ adds Delirium, who, quite literally, cycles through all the different bosses the player has encountered in the current run.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Northernlion's voice, which is one reason why he's so popular.
  • Never Live It Down: Trainwreck. In the first twenty minutes of this Isaac run, he died twice. He then spent the next hour trudging through the game with possibly the worst fire rate he had ever seen, eventually reaching Mega Satan... and dying. Years later, and it's still one of the most popular episodes of the series.
    • The Pot Play.
    • From XCOM: Enemy Unknown: "Loki had a medkit". He lets his Colonel-level Heavy Tiny Brick Studios die because he forgot that his sniper had could have healed him. Even a full year later the fans are referencing it, to the point that it's basically the meme of his XCOM playthroughs.
  • Squick: A few of Northernlion's comments can be a bit... gross.
