YMMV / NaNoWriMo

  • Fan Nickname: Typos, grammatical errors, and other flubs are lovingly christened as "Nanoisms".
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Persimmons and "perma-persimmons" originate from a misspelling of "permissions", meaning to allow independent NaNoers to publish select Nanoisms in print.
    • The "plot ninjas" and "plot kittens" that everyone decided they liked better than plot bunnies.
  • Padding: As mentioned above, there are many, many ways to inflate one's wordcount without necessarily contributing to one's plot development. Such as:
    • Removing contractions ('do not' vs 'don't').
    • Giving characters multi-word names or fanficul titles and insisting on a Full-Name Basis (or simply repeating them often).
    • Having a character sing along to a song on a radio, or recite lines from a play/novel/movie.
    • Introduce a new character and have them exchange names with everybody. The larger the group, the better.
    • Giving characters particular Verbal Tics, like stuttering, to up your wordcount. (paraphrased from No Plot? No Problem! "Give your character a stutter! Not only will it allow you to double all their dialogue, but everyone else in the story can spend pages wondering where the stutter came from!")
    • "Never delete anything. If you canít stand to look at it, just change the font to white and keep going." (from a 2011 pep talk by Erin Morgenstern)
    • The staff have a generator called "Word Sprints" if you're stuck, which suggests such things as "change the weather" or "kill a character." They also randomly suggest these on social media.
