YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S7 E2 "All Bottled Up"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: "The Great And Powerful Trixie goes big or not at all!"
  • Base-Breaking Character: Trixie. Some fans loved her antics throughout the episode while others thought that she was being way more obnoxious and insensitive than usual. A third camp who still don't like Starlight don't mind Trixie's behaviour so long as they get to see her annoy and make Starlight miserable throughout the episode.
  • Broken Base: The Mane Six's overall characterization in the episode. With the rate they have constantly talked about their friendship, The Mane 6 came off as less cute and heartwarming, and more braggart and exceedingly arrogant, with the more extreme critics saying as if they're mocking the audience for not having the best and most true friendship around like them (or in worst cases, having no friends at all). Some were definitely annoyed by it, and thought it was totally out of line for a group that was otherwise seen as very humble (though Rainbow Dash has had her arrogant moments in the past), while others don't see an issue and were appreciative of the deconstruction of the show's protagonists, giving them real flaws to learn a lesson, and were quick to point out that this was deliberate, as the Mane Six also suffer a Break the Haughty moment when they fail to beat the room puzzle record, due to that same hubris. Even that is up for debate, as some people aren't fond of the fact that these characters they've followed for the past 6 seasons suddenly gained a newly shared character flaw that wasn't there prior (or in the case of some of the characters, should have died out early on).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The retreat guide pony became pretty memorable for his deadpan delivery, and got big time props for calling out the Mane Six for their pride and lampshading their unnecessary song.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Granny Smith (under the influence of Starlight's anger) calls out Trixie for "bringing up [her] dark past", to which Trixie says she didn't know she had one. When we watch "The Perfect Pair", she kind of does have a dark past: her feud with Grand Pear.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Years before this episode came out, a fanfic called Spreading the Hate was released that involved using magic to spread anger. In it, Trixie casts a magic spell that makes every pony in Ponyville hate Twilight as much as she does, where as in this episode Starlight's bottled up anger towards Trixie accidentally infects three other ponies.
  • I Knew It!:
    • A popular Fanon has been that Equestrian magic works via Imagination-Based Superpower logic — here, Starlight invokes Ascended Fanon by explaining that spellcasting is indeed subject to the user's mind (whether for good or for bad), which arguably explains the many Forgot About His Powers and/or Strong as They Need to Be moments.
    • Once she actually learns it, Trixie does some pretty impressive magic. Trixie turning out to have a large amount of latent magical power she just needs the right training to use is a common fan idea that now seems to be true.
  • Les Yay: Shippers immediately seized upon the way Trixie stated "The Starlight I love is..." when describing what she was like before magically suppressing her emotions.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The Mane Six's inclusion was seen by some as utterly pointless Filler in an episode that might not have needed it, and could've been better off just being its own episode. Additionally, some felt it continually got in the way of the far more interesting Starlight Glimmer/Trixie plot, and that is not even mentioning the song, albeit being a deliberate meta joke.
