As charming and oftentimes adorable as the movie may be, there's still a little too much swearing for a PG-rated movie as well as some FamilyUnfriendlyViolence such as [[spoiler:a dog getting shot and killed with an arrow and a young boy getting stabbed with scissors ([[AssholeVictim even though he had it coming]])]], [[GoryDiscretionShot none of which is onscreen]] but the effects are still shown.

** Scout Master Ward. He honestly loves his job and feels Sam's defection is due to his failure as a mentor. Then his entire troop defects to help Sam and and the head Khaki Scout fires him. [[spoiler: Thankfully, Ward is reinstated after saving the head Khaki Scout. And he has a lady friend now.]]

* SpiritualSuccessor: To ''Film/MelodySWALK'' [[WordOfGod according to the writer/director himself]].

* RetroactiveRecognition: A pre-''Film/ManchesterByTheSea'' Creator/LucasHedges has a role in the film as Redford.

* OneSceneWonder: Jason Schwartzman as Cousin Ben.

* AwardSnub: Nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. No Picture, no Director, no Acting nominations, no Soundtrack or Cinematography or Editing or even Production Design. Screenplay. Feh.
** And to add insult to injury, it lost Best Original Screenplay to ''Film/DjangoUnchained''.

* GeniusBonus: 76$ in nickels is more than 1,500 nickels for anyone smart enough to do the math, which means that the box of nickels ''should'' weigh something like 20~ pounds or more.

* NightmareFuel: [[UncannyValley The paper mâché dummy]] that the Khaki Scouts leave in Suzy's room which Lionel finds. He is understandably freaked out.
** Sam's well-meant attempt to stick the earrings he made into Suzy's unpierced ears. We get a shot of her screaming in agony as he shoves them in, and then see her admiring them...while blood streams from her earlobes, down her neck. And those were ''fishhooks'' he shoved in there!
