- Epic Riff: Surprisingly for a normally laid-back sort of band, they have quite a few of these, like "It's Saturday" and "Punk Rock Superstar," amongst others.
- Growing the Beard: The debut album has a surprisingly modest sound for the distortion-happy alt-rock scene of the 1990s, and it's even a little folky in spots. Shapeshifter, their sophomore album, is when they musically came into their own, with a bigger, bolder production sound. Too bad only a small cult fanbase followed them.
- Older Than They Think: A few songs on the self-titled debut in 1997 were written several years earlier.
- Signature Song: "Sex & Candy," of course.
- Sophomore Slump: Shapeshifter just never took off, critically or commercially. There's a little bit of Critical Dissonance here as longtime fans of the band commonly tend to cite this record as their favorite.
