YMMV / Makoto Shinkai

  • Awesome Art: As the numerous real life to anime comparisons will show you, he's definitely an expert at making everything look good.
  • Awesome Music: Practically all of his film soundtracks are wonderful to the ears. Be it emotion-gripping or catchy and thematic, he always makes sure that the music fits the movie while still being great in independence.
  • Broken Base: The reception to his work usually falls into two camps. One side feels that his films are emotionally resonant and relatable, while another thinks that it's all pretty visuals and melodramatic tugging at heartstrings without much narrative substance and character depth.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Considering the liberal use of Lens Flare in Shinkai's work, fellow flare-lover J. J. Abrams getting the helm for Your Name's Live-Action Adaptation is oddly appropriate.
  • Tear Jerker: Why, WHY, Makoto-sensei, why do you enjoy pulling our heartstrings so much?
