YMMV: Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

  • Awesome Music: Grilleto by GARNiDELiA
  • Base Breaker: While she does have her perks, Miyuki Shiba is this due to a portion of the readers/viewers feeling uneasy regarding how she acts towards her older brother despite Tatsuya not feeling the same way. It gets somewhat better for her when it's explained in later novels as to why she acts the way she does, but that feeling of discomfort still remains.
    • Tatsuya himself is heavily this. On one hand alot of people think he's nothing more then a God-Mode Sue who literally has the Smart Ball 24/7 and thus he's boring. Some like him because while being weak at magic, he makes up for his own skills and that he actually tried to help bring his allies up to the same high standard he is.
  • Broken Base: It's basically a Love It or Hate It kind of story amongst the fanbase.
  • Eagleland: America is portrayed in a type 2 negative flavor.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse:
    • Erika seems to be well-liked even by people who can't stand the series.
    • Shizuku also has some fans.
    • Mibu Sayaka, mostly due to her role in the first arc.
  • Fan Nickname: "Japanese DragonProudSky" for Tatsuya in the Chinese ACG community.
    • The Mime- Mikihiko for those who can't remember his name.
    • Boobs- Mizuki. Again, an Inherently Funny Word for those who can't remember her name.
  • Fridge Logic: Tatsuya being a high school student at first seems unusual, considering he was a Child Soldier, already fought in battles and already seems to know more than the other students. However, Miyuki, special abilities aside, is an otherwise normal high school aged girl, he would need to be at the school as well to protect her.
  • The Great Politics Mess-Up: The geopolitical world of Mahouka following World War III. While most of it can be justified by being an Alternate History once magic is discovered in 1999 and taking place in the future, as explained in the Headscratchers section, some things just plain don't make sense, like the Soviet Union rising again, India absorbing Pakistan, Australia secluding itself in isolation, Japan managing to stay independant in all this turmoil, etc. Double point for many of the nations being typical future history stereotypes (Space-Filling Empire, Balkanize Me, Expanded States of America, Middle Eastern Coalition) rather than realistic geopolitical evolution.
  • Marty Stu: Tatsuya. The only thing he's shown to be weak at is his ability to use magic naturally, and yet he's so good at everything else that it more than makes up for said weakness.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • Tatsuya is very badass but the fandom can greatly exaggerate when it comes to boasting his abilities. This is also done by detractors, in a derogatory tone.
      • Fandom Rivalry: This exaggeration has apparently riled (surprisingly) reddit fans from the Gundam series, with some calling them on the same by invoking Kira Yamato as a much better character. Moreso fans of Gundam Build Fighters and its sequel Try since the Char Clone on both aforementioned shows share the same first name.
    • It applies to Miyuki as well but to a lesser extent than Tatsuya.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Found mainly in the Chinese community
Miyuki: My brother is super awesome! He is unbeatable!
    Others: Yeah righttt...you liar.
Tatsuya: Since my sister's honor is on the line, I will have to destroy you (curb-stomping his opponent)
    Opponent: You are awesome! Explanation
    • It even caught on to the international community to the point that anything mundane needs a Techno Babble explanation.
    • Also, "Yamato Spirit!", used as a derogatory mark, directed at Japan for being basically a Mary Sue nation that cannot lose or do wrong, against all logic and common sense.
  • Moe: Isn't Miyuki just the sweetest little sister ever?
  • Narm: The way Tatsuya and Miyuki turn towards each other in the opening just looks silly. They look like hand puppets.
  • Snark Bait: The entirety of this YMMV page is the testament to this status.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The reason why this series is so popular in Chinese ACG community. Most people got into the first episode by the controversy and hype this series generated. They stayed for the second episode due to the sporking comments.
  • Stoic Woobie: Tatsuya, when you learn his past, for being considered a fake magician that was experimented on by his own mother, robbing him of strong emotions, and then made to be a Child Soldier.
  • Unfortunate Implications: As highlighted by an ANN poster, the series is relatively controversial because China and America are portrayed in a very negative light (considering the fact that Japan has a very bad history with their Asian neighbors). It's also very racist as well as the series portrays immigrants (particularly the Chinese) in a very negative light. Ironically, this series is quite popular in China despite the anime not being streamed there.
