* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: Hard to believe now since the show has gone on for 9 seasons and spawned a series of [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic comic books]], a spin-off series with [[WesternAnimation/EquestriaGirls the main cast as humans]], and a [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyTheMovie2017 theatrical movie]], but back when the show was first announced, it already got very negative reactions from many people that believed it would be just another [[GirlShowGhetto shallow, brainless, frilly, girly-girl cartoon]] (and to say nothing of it being the newest incarnation of one of the most notorious MerchandiseDriven franchises of TheEighties). Even having high-profile and well-renowned animator Creator/LaurenFaust on board did little to convince skeptical doomsayers, with some even wondering if MLP would be her CreatorKiller. And then the show came out, and not too soon after the fact the [[PeripheryDemographic Brony fandom]] slowly took form. The rest is history.

YMMV cannot be played with.

* DesignatedVillain: For Trixie, this trope is played straight once and later deconstructed twice.
** Her initial appearance in "Boast Busters" displays her as a showy magician who is merely establishing mystique in a manner very much akin to real life performers. After some of the Mane Six come to the conclusion that she's a braggart and begin heckling her, she reveals herself as a MilesGloriosus, accepts their challenges and makes fools of them to [[SmallNameBigEgo bolster her own image]], even [[KickTheDog bullying Twilight who played no part in the heckling]]. Later, however, a monster [[DisproportionateRetribution destroys her caravan (and presumably causes loss of her livelihood) and none of the protagonists express sympathy for her, but continue to comment on her arrogance]]. While a nasty and arrogant {{Jerkass}}, she's no villain, though.
** The first deconstruction comes in "Magic Duel". Trixie not only [[ShamingTheMob calls out the town on the way they treated her before]] but also points out she [[DisproportionateRetribution lost everything]] thanks to what happened in Ponyville. Ironically, she ends up as the BigBad for that episode, having obtained - against the shopkeeper's own advice - the magic mind-control amulet for revenge in the first place. Even the others admit she wasn't ''that'' bad beforehand.
** Deconstructed again in "No Second Prances" where Twilight Sparkle was willing to give the dangerous and possibly psychotic Starlight Glimmer a chance at redemption but rigidly refuses to drop her personal grudge with the decidedly less villainous Trixie. The episode features Twilight being called out for it several times and gives her a MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment when it hits her just how badly she's harming Trixie.

** "We will love and tolerate the shit out of you" - shortened to "love and tolerance" - was the de facto slogan of the brony fandom in Season 1, meant to signify that the group held the show's themes of compassion and open-mindedness as its own core values. However, as the worst aspects of the fandom reared their ugly head in Season 2 and 3, it became increasingly clear that "love and tolerance" was really more of a passive-aggressive threat towards haters of the show and/or fandom, and the consensus behind the slogan became increasingly doubtful. Since then, the slogan had become synonymous of the {{glurge}} that had defined the early brony fandom, and is never used even ironically.

** [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicStarlightGlimmer Starlight Glimmer]] was an seen as an intriguingly unique and [[RealismInducedHorror realistic]] villain who managed who represented an ideological challenge while posing a serious threat despite lacking the sheer power/scale of prior foes. Her redemption, which many saw as rushed and invalidated the traits that made her popular, at the end of Season 5 and {{Deuteragonist}} status in Season 6 resulted in a BrokenBase with many wishing she had stayed a villain, at least long enough to get a more plausible redemption, instead of taking some of the hero spotlight from the Mane 6.
** [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicDiscord Discord]] was a beloved, chaotic villain (helped by the fact that he was played by Creator/JohnDeLancie) when he appeared in the Season 2 premiere. But his Season 3 HeelFaceTurn split the fanbase between those who welcomed the change and those who preferred his chaos not be tamed by friendship. While Season 4 mitigated this by showing he [[TokenEvilTeammate kept what made him popular as a villain]] and gave him a better-received redemption, he became increasingly [[BaseBreakingCharacter divisive]] afterward for continued antagonism (messing with the heroes under the guise of being helpful, his poorly thought out actions causing harm) caused many to prefer he be one way or the other.
** The changelings were bug-like shapeshifters who fed on love, whose creepy appearance, that they [[ParanoiaFuel could impersonate without anyone knowing]], and their [[TragicMonster need to feed on love to survive]] made them great villains. When "To Where and Back Again" redeemed nearly all of them due to discovering they could satiate their hunger by sharing love instead of taking it, getting a LighterAndSofter appearance change to go with this, many fans hated either HeelFaceTurn, the new appearance, or both. Tellingly, a majority of fanworks and fanart, bar canon redeemed changelings, use their pre-redemption appearance and nature even if they're not evil-aligned.
** [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicPrincessCelestia Princess Celestia]], the BigGood, is seen by many fans as a boring and weak character compared to her ExBigBad sister Luna. This invoked the three common meme trends in the MLP fandom of {{Troll}}estia, [[MemeticMolester Molestia]], and [[RonTheDeathEater Tyrantlestia]], preferring to see her as more villainous than she is in canon, helped by the appearance of her badass evil alter ego Daybreaker in "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E10ARoyalProblem A Royal Problem]]".

* TheInverseLawOfFandomLevity: This is a show aimed at, ostensibly, a younger demographic, with pastel colored ponies offering up heartwarming lessons about friendship and being a better individual. But you wouldn't know that from looking at what the fandom has produced:
** Early on, the fans spawned some of the darkest fanfiction imaginable, from the infamous ''Fanfic/CupcakesSergeantSprinkles'', (which imagines Pinkie Pie as a sadistic serial killer) to ''Fanfic/RainbowFactory'' (where Rainbow Dash is complicit in child murder on an industrial scale) and their various imitators. Name any main character, and there's at least one fanfic portraying them as a serial killer or psychological abuser, with their crimes depicted in disturbing detail.
** Possibly the fandom's single most popular fanfic (so much so that it inspired a heap of fanfics of its own) is ''Fanfic/FalloutEquestria''--which starts with the premise that the entire cast of the show died in a nuclear war. It follows a new group of ponies who struggle to survive, and attempt to rebuild society, in the lawless wasteland that used to be Equestria.
** The pony AbridgedSeries scene is dominated by two [[BlackComedy Black Comedies]], ''WebVideo/MyLittlePonyTheMentallyAdvancedSeries'' and ''WebVideo/FriendshipIsWitchcraft''. Thanks to their influence, most pony abridgings derive their humor from some combination of making the main six ponies all hate each other, turning one or more of the protagonists into complete sociopaths, making Princess Celestia a tyrant, portraying Equestria as a CrapsaccharineWorld rife with FantasticRacism, and abusing Spike.

** Similar to Rainbow, Smolder is an even greater example of having a TomboyishVoice who's not only OneOfTheBoys, but her being young results in an even greater chance for viewers to mistake her voice as being a [[CrossDressingVoices boy with a female actress]]. Additionally, her TertiarySexualCharacteristics are limited solely to her very short eyelashes which could easily be overlooked.

** The shows massive popularity and {{Fandom}} made it one of the most influential and prolific cartoons of the near-decade it ran, creating high expectation many felt it failed to measure up to. Reasons include finding it lacks the quality or depth the {{fanon}} claim or project onto it and what made it so praised not being unique to this show (not helped by [[OnceOriginalNowCommon its then-surprising quality becoming the new normal for later popular cartoons]]).

General clarification on works content

*** 1. Its approach to feminism and diversity. Prior to this show, the only way a show for girls would escape the GirlsShowGhetto was to appeal to boys as much as possible, with an edgy, action-focused tone and centered around {{Tomboy}} {{Action Girl}}s. But FIM pioneered what can be called "Pink Positive Feminism", by doubling down on the Lisa Frank-esque pastel palette and giving its main characters a diverse group of personalities that ranged from gruff to gentle and everything in between. But nowadays, we have shows like ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', which combined the aforementioned Pink Positiveness emphasis on personality diversity with more actual diversity, with an emphasis on differing races, sexual and even gender identities, that make FIM's innovations seem downright quaint in comparison; especially considering its first idea of "racial diversity" was a Zebra WitchDoctor that spoke in rhyme. To be fair, later seasons would feature Ponies representative of various other cultures, and the cultures of [[LoadsAndLoadsOfRaces the other races also got explored to a degree]], and there were even a few lesbian and gay couples in later seasons.

Added example(s), General clarification on works content; The Hub ended years ago

** Initially seemed to be the case in Britain. At first, British TV only aired the first season (on Boomerang, since there's no UK version of The Hub. Although it could happen), [[ScrewedByTheNetwork which stopped airing in early 2012]]. Compare this to the rest of Europe, where most countries have aired all currently-made episodes (My Little Pony has always been more popular in Europe than America, and – as happened in The '80s – Hasbro released most of this generation's early merch in Europe first). The series finally returned to British TV in 2013 via Tiny Pop, a channel targeted at preschoolers. It was later moved to the Tiny Pop's freeview sister channel Pop which is aimed at the same audience demographic as Nicktoons. Since then, [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff the trope has been pretty much averted, with the show now being well-loved in the country]] and having a highly dedicated fandom towards the show, with many fan artists being based there.

** Older fans and collectors sometimes blame [[PeripheryDemographic Bronies]] for making the Franchise/MyLittlePony toyline focus on just the [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicTheManeCast Main Characters]], as well blind bag figures and other figures with plastic hair. ** We have a [[WMG/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicConfirmed list]] of [[WildMassGuessing Wild Mass Guesses]] that turned out to be true.
** The idea that [[AllThereInTheScript Lotus Blossom]] (the pink-haired blue pony who works in the spa) has a twin sister named Aloe originated in FanFiction. In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E20GreenIsntYourColor Green Isn't Your Color]]", we see her {{Palette Swap}}ped twin for the first time. Turns out there are Europe-only [[http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Surprise_Twins_Pony G1]] and [[http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Rose_and_Lily G2]] twin pony toys who look very much like them.
** [[http://sweetiebelle-fim.deviantart.com/art/MAKE-IT-STOP-205208721 This image]] and [[http://death-driver-5000.deviantart.com/art/Corrupted-Twilight-Sparkle-259390898 this image]] predicted events that would happen in "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E2TheReturnOfHarmonyPart2 The Return of Harmony Part 2]]".
** A common fandom interpretation of Luna was that she'd be TheAtoner trying to improve her image. That's pretty much the exact plot of the season 2 episode "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E4LunaEclipsed Luna Eclipsed]]".
*** The ''Fanfic/PonyPOVSeries'' accurately guessed that Luna would [[NightmareFuelStationAttendant have a scary sense of taste.]]
** Some fans predicted Silver Spoon would show [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold some hidden kindness]] because she has a heart in the handle of the spoon in her Cutie Mark. In "Family Appreciation Day", she's the first pony to start applauding Granny Smith's story about the foundation of Ponyville.
** It was never implied that Spitfire was Captain of the Wonderbolts in her first couple of appearances, but most fans assumed she was after "The Best Night Ever", probably due to her being the more level-headed of the two named Wonderbolts. This was confirmed in "Hurricane Fluttershy" and in "Wonderbolts Academy".
** It was very common for fanfics to have the events of "Boast Busters" result in Trixie's life being ruined. Turns out that's EXACTLY what happened.
** ''Fanfic/GettingBackOnYourHooves'' had [[spoiler:Trixie be a dorky LargeHam after her HeelFaceTurn was fully completed. This is pretty much what happens with canon Trixie when she does the same.]]
** Ever since the first episode, fans have speculated what the future holds for Twilight Sparkle. It was fairly common belief early on that Celestia was grooming Twilight to be her eventual replacement, and while that hasn't come to pass, [[spoiler:she's now an Alicorn Princess]]. The Element of Magic is after all, as Twilight herself puts it, a "[[CoolCrown Big Crown Thingy]]". Helps that one of the show's staff [[http://princesschuchi.deviantart.com/art/Princess-TS-sketch-186760413 drew]] a sketch of SideStoryBonusArt a ''month'' after the pilot episode aired.
*** For two years prior to that, fans often referred to this possibility as Twilight "[[AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence ascending]]". [[spoiler:That's pretty much exactly what happened.]]
** Rarity calling [[spoiler:the newly transformed Twilight]] "an alicorn" in the Season 3 finale finally elevates that long-popular FanNickname for the {{Winged Unicorn}}s of the series to canon status. (The "Alicorn Amulet" in "Magic Duel" already introduced the word itself, but didn't yet make quite clear what it referred to).
** Several seiyuu fans thought that Creator/KikukoInoue would be a perfect voice for the Japanese version of Princess Celestia. It turns out she ''does'' voice her in the official Japanese dub.
*** Same for those who predicted that Creator/ShigeruChiba would voice Discord.
** Many fans speculated over the years that the main reason Princess Celestia and Luna made Twilight the Princess of Friendship and let the Mane Six handle most threats to Equestria[[note]]not to mention Princess Celestia making Twilight Sparkle her star pupil to begin with, arranging for her to make friends in Ponyville and confront Nightmare Moon in the pilot, arranging for her to defeat King Somba at the start of Season 3, giving the test that made Twilight an alicorn, and increased her responsibilities like crowned her the Princess of Friendship in the Season 3 Finale, put the Mane Six in charge of the Friendship School, etc[[/note]] was because Celestia was [[TricksterMentor secretly preparing]] Twilight to be [[spoiler:her replacement]]. "The Beginning of the End: Part 1" more or less confirmed it, with Celestia and Luna announcing their desire to [[spoiler:retire and pass the torch on to Twilight and her friends]], and using how the Mane Six have been saving Equestria and running the School of Friendship without their help for so long as an argument for why they're perfect for the job.
