* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: Major villains who are serious threats to Equestria (Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, Lord Tirek, etc) are typically very popular with fans. In contrast, minor daily-life antagonists tend to receive much more emphatically negative responses.

** Princess Luna was ''the'' EnsembleDarkhorse of the shows first Season, the massive amount of fans and {{fanon}} she received becoming a cornerstone of the series fandom. But once later Seasons [[BreakoutCharacter made her recurring]] and developed, some started to find this overhyped as instead praising [[OCStandIn their idealized/projected version of Luna]] which Luna in the show failed to measure up to, [[OutatedByCanon contradicted]], or left unsubstantiated. Not helping is her SuperpoweredEvilSide Nightmare Moon becoming seen as cliche and underwhelming [[OnceOriginalNowCommon in retrospect]] and many tiering of fan tendency to bash or [[RonTheDeathEater vilify]] Princess Celestia to make them look better.

* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: Hard to believe now since the show has gone on for 9 seasons and spawned a series of [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic comic books]], a spin-off series with [[WesternAnimation/EquestriaGirls the main cast as humans]], and a [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyTheMovie2017 theatrical movie]], but back when the show was first announced, it already got very negative reactions from many people that believed it would be just another [[GirlShowGhetto shallow, brainless, frilly, girly-girl cartoon]] (and to say nothing of it being the newest incarnation of one of the most notorious MerchandiseDriven franchises of TheEighties). Even having high-profile and well-renowned animator Creator/LaurenFaust on board did little to convince skeptical doomsayers, with some even wondering if MLP would be her CreatorKiller. And then the show came out, and not too soon after the fact the [[PeripheryDemographic Brony fandom]] slowly took form. The rest is history.

* DesignatedVillain: For Trixie, this trope is played straight once and later deconstructed twice.
** Her initial appearance in "Boast Busters" displays her as a showy magician who is merely establishing mystique in a manner very much akin to real life performers. After some of the Mane Six come to the conclusion that she's a braggart and begin heckling her, she reveals herself as a MilesGloriosus, accepts their challenges and makes fools of them to [[SmallNameBigEgo bolster her own image]], even [[KickTheDog bullying Twilight who played no part in the heckling]]. Later, however, a monster [[DisproportionateRetribution destroys her caravan (and presumably causes loss of her livelihood) and none of the protagonists express sympathy for her, but continue to comment on her arrogance]]. While a nasty and arrogant {{Jerkass}}, she's no villain, though.
** The first deconstruction comes in "Magic Duel". Trixie not only [[ShamingTheMob calls out the town on the way they treated her before]] but also points out she [[DisproportionateRetribution lost everything]] thanks to what happened in Ponyville. Ironically, she ends up as the BigBad for that episode, having obtained - against the shopkeeper's own advice - the magic mind-control amulet for revenge in the first place. Even the others admit she wasn't ''that'' bad beforehand.
** Deconstructed again in "No Second Prances" where Twilight Sparkle was willing to give the dangerous and possibly psychotic Starlight Glimmer a chance at redemption but rigidly refuses to drop her personal grudge with the decidedly less villainous Trixie. The episode features Twilight being called out for it several times and gives her a MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment when it hits her just how badly she's harming Trixie.

* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'':

** "We will love and tolerate the shit out of you" - shortened to "love and tolerance" - was the de facto slogan of the brony fandom in Season 1, meant to signify that the group held the show's themes of compassion and open-mindedness as its own core values. However, as the worst aspects of the fandom reared their ugly head in Season 2 and 3, it became increasingly clear that "love and tolerance" was really more of a passive-aggressive threat towards haters of the show and/or fandom, and the consensus behind the slogan became increasingly doubtful. Since then, the slogan had become synonymous of the {{glurge}} that had defined the early brony fandom, and is never used even ironically.

* DiscreditedMeme: Creator/NicoleOliver has made it clear that she does ''not'' tolerate [[BigGood Princess Celestia]] being portrayed as a tyrant (''[[https://derpibooru.org/1519267 especially]]'' of the ThoseWackyNazis variety) or molester. This came to a head when a fan at a convention infamously asked her for her opinion on the latter. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cWBG1GKn8A Oliver reacted exactly how you'd expect]].

** [[DitzyGenius Princess]] [[FishOutOfTemporalWater Luna]], since ''Luna Eclipsed''. [[JerkassWoobie All she wanted for was redemption to be accepted back by her own people, yet instead of helping her adapt in the modern world, everybody else (except Twilight and Pipsqueak) hated her and pushed her away, leaving her in a depressing night of loneliness]]. And of course, let's not get started on the immense "Luna is best pony" adherents in the Brony community, most artwork about her portraying her trying to learn clumsily about the Modern World, and looking quite cute once she messes up due to her sheer naïvete (e.g. ''Fanfic/{{Progress}}'')

*** 1. Its approach to feminism and diversity. Prior to this show, the only way a show for girls would escape the GirlsShowGhetto was to appeal to boys as much as possible, with an edgy, action-focused tone and centered around {{Tomboy}} {{Action Girl}}s. But FIM pioneered what can be called "Pink Positive Feminism", by doubling down on the Lisa Frank-esque pastel palette and giving its main characters a diverse group of personalities that ranged from gruff to gentle and everything in between. But nowadays, we have shows like ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', which combined the aforementioned Pink Positiveness emphasis on personality diversity with more actual diversity, with an emphasis on differing races, sexual and even gender identities, that make FIM's innovations seem downright quaint in comparison; especially considering its first idea of "racial diversity" was a Zebra WitchDoctor that spoke in rhyme. To be fair, later seasons would feature Ponies representative of various other cultures, and the cultures of [[LoadsAndLoadsOfRaces the other races also got explored to a degree]], and there were even a few lesbian and gay couples in later seasons.

** Initially seemed to be the case in Britain. At first, British TV only aired the first season (on Boomerang, since there's no UK version of The Hub. Although it could happen), [[ScrewedByTheNetwork which stopped airing in early 2012]]. Compare this to the rest of Europe, where most countries have aired all currently-made episodes (My Little Pony has always been more popular in Europe than America, and – as happened in The '80s – Hasbro released most of this generation's early merch in Europe first). The series finally returned to British TV in 2013 via Tiny Pop, a channel targeted at preschoolers. It was later moved to the Tiny Pop's freeview sister channel Pop which is aimed at the same audience demographic as Nicktoons. Since then, [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff the trope has been pretty much averted, with the show now being well-loved in the country]] and having a highly dedicated fandom towards the show, with many fan artists being based there.
