YMMV / Kyoto Animation

  • Broken Base:
    • The set of Haruhi Suzumiya episodes known as Endless Eight. See that page for more details.
    • The act of even adapting Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, after the first PV. See that page as well.
    • In general, after 2012, the studio has fans for its editing and visuals, with fans complimenting the storytelling, or it's seen as a "style with no substance" studio with impressive visuals but consistently lacking story.
  • Dork Age: Some fans felt that Kyoto Animation started going through one in 2012. Most of their projects in that time were either smaller projects such as Amagi Brilliant Park and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions or overly-ambitious projects like Beyond the Boundary. While no one really thought their shows in this time were bad it is often agreed that they lacked the magic of their classic-era anime. It only got worse when Myriad Colors Phantom World aired which was met to generally negative reception causing fans to think that Kyoto Animation had really lost their way. Seems to have been alleviated for now with the one-two punch of Sound! Euphonium season 2 and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid both getting positive reception.

  • Win Back the Crowd: Kyoto Animation did not start off 2016 on a good note with Myriad Colors Phantom World being met to generally negative reception and some even accusing the studio of "selling-out" to generic light novels. Then came Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 where Kyoto Animation delivered the one-two punch of Sound! Euphonium season 2 and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid both of which were met to much more positive reception and some fans even saying its their best shows since their peak period.
